Emily Burns Strayer (née Erwin, before Robison; born August 16, 1972) is an American songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and a founding member of the Dixie Chicks.
Strayer plays banjo, dobro, guitar, lap steel, bass, mandolin, accordion, and sitar.
She limited her singing to harmony with backing vocals at first, but in her role as the Court Yard Hounds, she has assumed the role of lead vocalist.
Early life
Emily Erwin was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Paul Erwin and Barbara Trask's family moved to Addison, Texas, where she and her two older sisters, Julia and Martha, were raised. Emily and Martha (later referred to Martie) both taught, and together they became proficient on several instruments while in elementary school.
Emily began playing the violin and banjo at age seven, and then delved into all of the string instruments she could find. Martie joked that Emily was more patient than she was on the fiddle, and that, because she wanted to keep the fiddle as her instrument, she begged Emily to learn something else. Emily responded by mastering the five string banjo by reading books to learn about chord progressions.
Jane Frost, the Patsy Montana Museum and the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, remembers the sisters' age from 1984 to 1989, as well as schoolmates Troy and Sharon Gilchrist. The foursome were touring with the Blue Night Express in part because of the amount of traveling they had to do to reach faraway festivals, often with a parent or friend of the family, who would bring them home long after dark at night. They believed it was worth the sacrifices to meet their musical heroes and enjoyed the camaraderie and tricks of other performers' instruments. The sisters were reportedly "most obsessive" in busking at small venues and attending bluegrass festivals. Since Martie graduated from secondary school at Greenhill School with Emily still attending her studies, the two girls stayed involved in the bluegrass scene.
Personal life
Emily married country singer Charlie Robison on May 1, 1999. Their wedding was held at the Cibolo Creek Ranch. Martie later revealed on a VH1 show that she had written "Cowboy Take Me Away" for them during their courtship. They have three children: Charles Augustus, nicknamed "Gus," was born on November 11, 2002, and twins Julianna Tex and Henry Benjamin were born on April 14, 2005. After nine years of marriage, they divorced on August 6, 2008.
When composing the Court Yard Hounds album, she became intimate with Martin Strayer. Violet Isabel Strayer, Strayer's daughter, was born in Strayer (September 4, 2012). In 2013, the two married in 2013.
