Early life

Kinney was born in Lancaster, Nebraska, to Vaughn Charles and Jeanne Kinney. During her youth, she and her family migrated often, including to Nevada, Oregon, and other Nebraska areas. 3 Kinney spent a semester at New York University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre at Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2006. Kinney then moved to New York, where she pursued a Broadway and acting career.

Kinney began working in coffee shops, where she met people from the acting and music industries. 7 She appeared in 20 plays during her four years of college and began her professional acting career at the age of 21, when she was cast in the play Spring Awakening as Anna, a young German schoolgirl. In the play August: Osage County, Kinney costarred as Jean Fordham the following year. 4 She was then cast Emily on Showtime's The Big C. Later, Kinney appeared on NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent, where she appeared as Jeannie Richmonds. Kinney appeared in her debut film with Aunt Tigress playing Gina. Kinney appeared in a number of recurring guest and cameo roles in various films and television shows.

In 2011, Kinney appeared on The Walking Dead, an AMC television horror film. Although she was only 25 at the start of production, Beth's role was actually the 16-year-old sister of Maggie's, who was the 16-year-old sister of Maggie in Season 2. Kinney was promoted to series regular after two years on the program. Greene is one of a select group of zombie victims who must not only survive a zombie apocalypse but also deal with other survivors who are much more deadly than the undead. In the role of Haley Cole, Kinney returned to the Law & Order franchise. In 2013, she released Expired Love, her second EP. In 2014, it was re-released with two additional tracks. Kinney addresses the album's history in a talk with AMC: "Expired Love" is about my life. However, I do agree that my style in acting seeps into my work a lot. In that they are little stories, my songs are similar to Tom Waits'. Sometimes I write songs based on a single word or emotion that keeps popping up for me. I suppose because I've never played a character for so long, it won't be able to help but seep its way into life. Perhaps this is why a particular idea keeps coming up for me, because this is something we're used to seeing on the show."

"Rockstar," Kinney's latest album, was released on December 9, 2014. She appeared on numerous television shows, including a starring role in ABC's Forever's sixteenth episode titled "Memories of Murder" and a co-starring spot in the eighteenth episode of The CW's "All-Star Team-Up" after she was fired from The Walking Dead. In addition, she appeared on Cinemax's critically acclaimed Masters of Sex for four episodes. In the music video for Train song "Bulletproof Picasso," Kinney appeared. On October 2, 2015, ten Kinney's latest studio album, This Is War, was released. The album also featured "This Is War" as well as "Birthday Cake."

Kinney was the central protagonist in Hallmark Channel's Love On The Sidelines in 2016. On February 12, 2016, it was announced that Kinney would appear alongside Hayley Atwell in ABC's Conviction's main cast. "The legal for the Unit team [was] remarkably brilliant [was] a bit naive and occasionally, an undercurrent sadness emerged[d] on Conviction." Brie Larvan/Bug-Eyed Bandit on Arrow, a role she played on The Flash, appeared on March 30, 2016. "Back on Love," her latest single, "Back on Love" was announced on October 28, 2016.

On January 26, 2017, Kinney will appear in the cast of ABC's Ten Days in the Valley alongside Kyra Sedgwick. Casey, "Jane's upbeat young assistant who dresses up to her boss as a role model," Kinney revealed. Mermaid Song, Kinney's single, was released in October 2017. On August 24, 2018, Kinney released her solo album Oh Jonathan, which also included a single named "Boy Band Hero" earlier this month. Kinney announced a tour in support of the album, marking her second visit to the country.
