Early life

Eleanor Gow, a former coach of the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, and Frances Gow, a nurse, were born in Killara, New South Wales, on March 29, 1964, the daughter of entrepreneur and sound engineer Peter Gow, a former coach of the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and a former Sydney rugby league team. She is of Scottish descent. When she was ten years old, Macpherson's parents divorced, and she and her mother and two siblings moved. Her mother remarried, and her surname was changed from Gow to Macpherson because of a clerical mistake in enrolling at her new school. (her stepfather's surname).

Macpherson grew up in East Lindfield, a suburb on Sydney's North Shore, and attended Killara High School, obtaining her Higher School Certificate in 1981. At the University of Sydney, she briefly studied law for one year. Mimi Macpherson, a businesswoman and environmentalist, was born Miriam Frances Gow.

Personal life

Billy Joel was dated by Macpherson in the early 1980s. Joel has stated that the songs "This Night" and "And So It Goes" were written about his Macpherson's relationship. Macpherson is also believed to be at least partially responsible for Joel's song "Uptown Girl."

On a photo shoot for Elle magazine in 1984, Macpherson met French fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon. They married in May 1986 and divorced three years later.

In 1996, Macpherson started a relationship with financier Arpad Busson. They have two sons. The family lived together in London until their separation in July 2005.

In early 2009, Macpherson began dating Miami, Florida-based hotel heir and billionaire Jeffrey Soffer, son of Donald Soffer, who died in early 2009. They broke up in March 2012 but reformed after his fall in a helicopter crash in November 2012. They got engaged in March 2013 and married at the Laucala Resort in Fiji in July 2013. Career

Macpherson has enrolled at Sydney University to study law. She travelled to the United States to work one year modelling jobs in order to have enough funds to pay for her law books before starting her undergraduate studies. She travelled to New York City, where she first signed up with Click Model Management. Her modelling career began in 1982 with a television commercial for Tab, establishing her as a "girl next door" figure in Australia.

Macpherson's fame quickly rose during the 1980s, appearing on cover and in the pages of major magazines including Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Marie Claire, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Tatler, Tatler, GQ, Allure, Mademoiselle, Flare, Maxim, and New York. She anchored her high-profile image by frequent appearances in Elle; she was on numerous front pages and appeared in every issue for six years in a row. She met Gilles Bensimon, the Elle's creative director at the age of 21, during that period. Macpherson became the long-serving French skin care company Biotherm in 1985.

The reality competition show Fashion Star, a Macpherson hosts and executive produces. William Ryan Holt and Michael Mischler broke into Macpherson's Los Angeles home when she was away on business in Chicago between 11 and 22 July 1997, according to a police statement that was reproduced online. They took an estimated $100,000 worth of jewellery, $6,000 in cash, and several photographs. On August 4, 1997, the two were arrested. Mischler, 29, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted extortion and one count of burglary. He was sentenced to six years and eight months in jail. Holt, a former US Air Force enlisted man and a military-justice prisoner who was refused parole on parole, pleaded guilty to one count of extortion and was sentenced to a year in jail.

Macpherson is Africa's first European Ambassador for RED, a Bono and Bobby Shriver project to raise funds and awareness for the Global Fund to Combat AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, with the aim of eradicating AIDS in women and children. She also serves as an ambassador for UNICEF.

She is an ambassador for the Smile Foundation in Australia, which supports the families of children with rare disorders and coordinates federal research grants.
