Rose rose to fame as a host on MTV Australia (2007-2011), followed by several high-profile modelling gigs, most notably as the face of Maybelline New York in Australia.

In addition, she has appeared on various television shows, most notable Australia's Next Top Model (2009) and The Project on Network Ten (2009–2011). Rose began pursuing an acting career from 2008 to 2020.

Early life

Rose was born in Melbourne, the niece of German film actress Ellen Bang, and the nephew of 20-year-old single mother and artist Katia Langenheim, who Rose identifies as one of her role models and grandmother of German film actress Ellen Bang. Rose travelled extensively as a young child, visiting rural Victoria, Tasmania, and Surfers Paradise before finally settling in Melbourne. She attended University High School and Footscray City College as an adolescent. Rose is the goddaughter of Indigenous Australian boxer Lionel Rose and Alec Campbell's great-granddaughter, who was the last surviving Australian soldier to fight in the Battle of Gallipoli.

Personal life

Rose came out as a lesbian at the age of 12. She said she was bullied, and that it included verbal and physical assault by her male peers due to her sexuality and gender dissimilarities. A relative even sexually assaulted a child.

When growing up and finding that she was saving up money to transition from female to male, Rose was convinced she was a boy. "I was in my mind as something I wanted to do but then I... didn't." I think I grew out of it. I also used to sleep on my front because I didn't want to get boobs ever, which I believe actually worked." Rose expressed gratitude for the fact that she did not have gender reassignment surgery and that she does not want to have children one day. Modelling led her to discover androgyny, and she was able to model with various gender terms, she said. "I remember being at a yum cha restaurant with my dad and the owner, who said, 'Excuse me, we're trying to work out if you're a handsome boy or a pretty girl,'" she said. It was a compliment and I was pleasantly surprised, but I was determined to be a handsome boy when I heard about it."

"I am very gender fluid and seem more like I wake up every day sort of gender neutral," Rose says. This news came less than a week after she announced Break Free, in which she transforms from a feminine woman to a heavily tattooed man. Rose said she prefers to use feminine pronouns more often, but she also uses they/them pronouns. She said that if she had to choose a sex, she would choose male, but that she does not appear to have been born with different body parts. Seeing the desire her transgender friends had for transition, she wondered if her desire for change matched theirs and concluded that being gender neutral. "I believe that I will remain a woman at this moment," says the narrator, but who knows. "I'm so relaxed right now, and yet I'm also a lot," she said.

Rose was engaged to fashion designer Phoebe Dahl in 2014; they ended their intimate life in December 2015. Rose was in a relationship with singer Jess Origliasso of The Veronicas from October 2016 to April 2018, having previously dated in 2008.

Rose is a vegan due to climate change's change.

Rose is a supporter of the Geelong Cats in Australia's Football League team.

Rose had suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide at age 12. She has suffered with mental health issues throughout her life, attempted suicide several times, and has been diagnosed with a complex post-traumatic stress disorder and clinical depression (which was incorrectly diagnosed as bipolar disorder).

Rose underwent emergency back surgery for a spine injury that resulted in two herniated discs due to physical stunts on the set of Batwoman in 2019. She said she would have been in danger of being paralyzed if she did not have the surgery.

Rose started her Girlfriend model search in 2002, finishing in second place behind Catherine McNeil in second place. She collaborated with Australian fashion brand Milk and Honey in 2010 to produce a capsule fashion collection. Washed jeans, leather jackets, and T-shirts were included in Ruby Rose's collection Milk and Honey. In Australia, the clothing range was available in selected stores. Rose has also launched a collaboration collection with street footwear brand Gallaz.

Rose began collaborating with Phoebe Dahl for their clothing collection Faircloth Lane in 2014. Rose competed against 2000 other contenders in a three-week national search in Australia in order to land her position as an MTV VJ in a three-week national search, as former VJ Lyndsey Rodrigues moved to the United States to co-host TRL. On a busy Sydney street, she shot 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes against Jackass' Bam Margera and kissed strangers. "Being a model, there is always something they want to change," she said. If they want someone a little bit skinnier, a little bit taller, and a little bit prettier, MTV wants you to be yourself, not censoring anything or not conforming to something.

Rose received the ASTRA Award for Favourite Female Personality in 2009. She went to Kenya to "highlight [the] excellent work" done by Global Vision International. She appeared in "Media Virgins," a guest judge on Australia's Next Top Model, and she also served as a reporter for the finale of Australia's Next Top Model.

The 7pm Project, an Australian television news talk show produced by Roving Enterprises, aired on Network Ten in July 2009. Rose, Dave Hughes, Charlie Pickering, Carrie Bickmore, and James Mathison hosted The 7pm Project in July 2009. She left the service to concentrate on her own hosting projects. FOX8 had won the rights to produce Ultimate School Musical, which features ordinary teenagers from a school trying to bring a music performance to a professional level in less than six weeks, as it was revealed in October 2009. Rose debuted in season 3 of the Orange Is the New Black cast in 2015. Rose had been cast as Batwoman in an Arrowverse crossover on August 7, 2018. Kate Kane's role as the first openly lesbian lead superhero in television has been praised. On October 6, 2019, Batwoman appeared on The CW. On social media, Rose's casting as Batwoman was met with backlash and criticism. In 2006, DC Comics, which owns the rights to the long-serving comic book superhero Batman, reintroduced the character as a lesbian of Jewish descent. Some online commentators chastised Rose for not being Jewish, but the assertion that she identifies as genderfluid makes her "not gay enough" for the position, according to some. Following the backlash, Rose reacted on Twitter and deactivated public commenting on her Instagram account. She took a tweet prior to leaving Twitter and saying, "Ruby is not a lesbian, therefore she can't be batwoman," she said in a tweet responding to the negative reaction, "where on earth does she say," she wrote "the funniest thing I've ever read." Rose called for a merger between women and minorities, and imploring women and the LGBT community to be more aware of each other.

Rose also addressed the backlash against her inclusion as the title character of the television series Batwoman in Entertainment Weekly's 2019 LGBTQ special issue. "I was invited to audition for Orange is the New Black because the show wanted to have a gender-fluid woman, but "being a lesbian in Batwoman meant that I could not be a lesbian because I'm not a woman," she said. She said that although her initial reaction was dismissive, she later considered if there was a way to ensure that others were not offended by her identity, and that she would consider herself a "fluid" gender, but also a lesbian."

Rose departed Batwoman after the first season in May 2020 and had no explicit reason for her departure. Her character was later written out of the series and replaced with one named Ryan Wilder, portrayed by Javicia Leslie. Rose later said she sustained an injury during the first season's production. She described herself as the source of a series "taxing" in August 2020 and said her back surgery after the injury was a contributing factor in her decision to leave. "I would absolutely do it" in a March 2021 interview with ComicBookMovie.com. I don't think this would be good for the story because I believe designing the new Batwoman is more relevant than going back too far into Kate Kane, but I would." "I've watched a few episodes, and I think how they're doing it is beautiful." I think [Ryan Wilder's] time has come to shine," I say. Wallis Day, an English actress, was cast as Kate Kane later this month, as the show's plot involved Kate getting surgical correction to her face after an airplane crash that left her injured. Rose said she was allergic to latex in July 2021, which was another reason for her leaving Batwoman as her character's mask was made of latex. Johnson eventually revealed that Rose had been fired from Batwoman (not quitting as she had previously stated), with Warner Bros. releasing a statement in response to the allegations that "Warner Bros Television did not decide not to engage Ruby for season two" after "multiple complaints regarding her work behavior."

Rose portrayed Viola in a livestreamed table read of Twelfth Night on May 22, 2020, as part of a charity that raises funds for COVID-19 pandemic relief. She will also appear in the action comedy Three Sisters.

Rose took a sabbatical from Hollywood in November 2021 to return to Australia.

Rose performed her first single "Guilty Pleasure" with Gary Goetz in February 2012. "On Your Side" was released and directed by The Veronicas in November 2016. She is a champion of many charities, won a charity boxing competition, and has travelled to Laos and Africa each year to volunteer.

Animal rights, anti-bullying, and youth mental health are among the topics of concern for Rose, where she works as an ambassador for Headspace. In a photo spread for Maxim Australia and PETA as part of the campaign "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur," she exhibited her tattoos.
