Boxing career

Malave, a two-time Golden New York Gloves champion, had his first professional boxing match against Ruben DeJesus, defeating him in four rounds unanimously in Abu Dhabi's Audubon Ballroom. Malave lost his second battle against Freytes Caban, who came into the match with a 5-1 record, beating Malave in a close match on March 16 the same year. Malave had won nine out of his next ten bouts, including a rematch against Freytus Caban, reversing the previous meeting by winning a unanimous vote. Doc McClendon, a journeyman boxer, was his only loss in a string of victories.

Malave defeated Harold Weston, who would later become a world champion, with a record of 10-2 and 5 knockouts. Harold Weston played in the August 9, 1971 match with a 12-1 record. Malave was deemed winner by a split-decision decision. Malave went on a streak of ten fights without losing, winning 8 fights with two draws in a row. In the rematch at the Garden by unanimous vote, he defeated Harold Weston, as well as a rematch against Pat Murphy at the Felt Forum that was a draw. At the Felt Forum, he defeated United Kingdom Commonwealth lightweight champion Percy Hayles of Kingston, Jamaica, to win by a slim margin.

Malave defeated Ray Lampkin by an eighth-round loss at the Felt Forum in New York on June 4, 1973. In Boston, Mass., Malave engaged in a confrontation. In the 3rd round, Greg Joiner was defeated by a knockout. In the 7th round, then met former World Lightweight Champion Ken Buchanan, who was defeated by a TKO in what was his last professional boxing match.

Acting career

While pursuing his budding career as a professional boxer, Malave studied acting at Herbert Berghoff Studios in the West Village. He appeared in a number of plays at various playhouses around New York. He was first in lead roles in Miguel Pinero's "Short Eyes" at Lincoln Center, where he received rave accolades from The New York Times. In the Barney Miller pilot for ABC, he appeared as "Ramon Santos" in the Barney Miller pilot, re-shot for Season One. He appeared in two other episodes of the sitcom, portraying a different character each time.

He appeared in the short lived series Chopper One for NBC and appeared in Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino. He then landed a role in Deadly Heroes with Don Murray and James Earl Jones. Chu Chu Chu Chu returned to Los Angeles to reshoot the Barney Miller pilot. He moved to Los Angeles in 1975 and spent the majority of his acting career, except for a one-year stint in New York for a starring role in the NBC soap opera For Richer in 1978. He appeared in The Main Event, 1979, starring Barbra Streisand and Ryan O'Neal. Rudy appeared in Chuck Norris' film A Force of One earlier this year.
