In 2002, Hough won the WDSF World Latin Championship and the Blackpool U-21 Latin championship with Aneta Piotrowska in 2003. He has received the LA Outstanding Dancer of the Year and New York Dance Alliance Outstanding Dance Awards.

The category of Outstanding Choreography for the Emmy Awards was moved to the Primetime Live Show on September 22, 2013, and all of the nominees in the category were expected to produce and perform a number with show host Neil Patrick Harris. The Dancing with the Stars founder Hough was included in that number, as well as the other candidates. "It's sure to be an original number," Ken Ehrlich, the show's executive producer, announced. It's likely that all of them will be used to bring this number together as choreographers. Hough went on to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography. Julianne Hough and Tessandra Chavez received their second Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography on September 12, 2015. This was Julianne Hough's first Emmy Award for outstanding choreography and Chavez's first Emmy award for outstanding choreography. Hough has been nominated for nine Emmy Awards for choreography, as well as the two nominations that he went on to win.

"Move Live on Tour," a summer tour of over 40 towns around the United States and Canada, was announced on March 18, 2014, by Hough and his sister, Julianneanne, who performed and performed, as well as the appearance of a group of dancers hired by the Houghs who were selected through auditions. They began on the sold-out tour in Park City, Kansas, on May 25, 2014, and concluded it in Los Angeles on July 26, 2014. Several more shows were added to the tour itinerary, which also sold out due to the popularity of ticket sales and several sold-out venues well before the tour officially began. The Hough brothers collaborated with Nappytabs on the tour choreography.

Following the success of the 2014 tour and high demand, the Houghs announced the revival of "Move Live on Tour" in the summer of 2015. The sold-out tour ran from June 12, 2015, to August 8, 2015, in many cities around the United States and Canada, and visited bigger venues than in the previous year. As collaborator choreographers alongside the Hough siblings, Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo "Nappytabs" returned. Auditions were also held to recruit a new group of dancers to join the Houghs, but some back-up dancers from last year's return were also back.

The Houghs announced that 'Move Interactive', a free fitness pop-up festival in Los Angeles, was the first of many to come. At Pulse Fitness Studios, led by celebrity personal trainer and owner Mark Harari, the event got off in Sherman Oaks with a workout session. The participants then took part in a 2-mile run along Ventura Boulevard before finishing off with a dance fitness class at JustDance Los Angeles. The event was held to "bring peace, love, and human interaction into our everyday lives," Hough says. On July 14, the Houghs hosted their second free Move Interactive festival in Fryman Canyon, LA, which included a hike and team building exercises.

MOVE BEYOND Live on Tour announced on December 14, 2016, a new tour that would take place in 2017.

In season four (week 6) Hough appeared as a guest instructor with Julianne and Apolo Anton Ohno, making his first appearance on Dancing with the Stars. In season five, he joined the cast of professional instructors and was paired with Jennie Garth. In the semi-finals, Hough and Garth were disqualified, finishing in fourth place.

Hough was paired with actress Shannon Elizabeth for season six. On April 29, 2008, they were barred from the show, earning the competition in sixth place.

Hough was partnered with model/TV host Brooke Burke for season seven. In a rehearsal on October 4, 2008, Hough tripped and collapsed, landing his head on the ground and momentarily blacked out. He was taken to the hospital but sustained no injuries, but he was not hurt. On November 25, 2008, Hough and Burke earned the mirror ball trophy and secured season seven.

Hough was paired with rapper Lil' Kim for season eight. They were kicked out of the show finishing in fifth place on May 5, 2009.

Hough was partnered with model Joanna Krupa for season nine. They were disqualified in week nine, the semi-finals, on November 17, 2009, finishing fourth.

Hough was partnered with Nicole Scherzinger, the lead singer from the singing group The Pussycat Dolls and a former Eden's Crush co-star. On May 25, 2010, the couple reached the finals and won the competition. It was Hough's second victory.

Hough appeared on Dirty Dancing and Ferris Bueller's Day Off for the third time in season eleven.

Hough did not attend season 12 in order to be a part of the film COBU 3D (later renamed to Make Your Move 3D).

He was partnered with actress and television presenter Ricki Lake, who appeared in Hairspray as Tracy Turnblad. Lake scored consistently high throughout the season and ended up in third place.

For season 14, Hough partnered with television actress Maria Menounos. For the first time in the season, the couple made the first 30 of the season and topped the leader board for the first time. The couple made it to the semi-finals, but they were disqualified after finishing at the top of the leader board. On a night where she came in first place with the judges (the first was Willa Ford in season three).

Hough was paired with Shawn Johnson, the season eight champion, in season 15 (All Stars). They were runners-up to Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani.

Hough announced on July 27, 2012 that season 15 would be his last. A few months later, Hough announced on Twitter that he would be back for season 16 because of his other commitments, but that I will do both." "I'm pumped." Kellie Pickler, a country singer and former American Idol contestant, was partnered with him. Despite previously announcing that he would not be participating in this season, Hough was announced on February 24, 2015, as one of the returning professional dancers on season 20. He was partnered with gymnast Nastia Liukin. They made it to the semi-finals, but they were then disqualified on May 12, finishing in fourth place.

He was paired with wildlife conservationist and daughter Bindi Irwin, who was paired with Steve Irwin, a wildlife biologist and mother of Bindi Irwin for season 21. On November 24, 2015, the couple made it to the finals and won the tournament, marking Hough's sixth victory on the show. For Season 22, Hough did not return.

Hough would return as a professional dancer for season 23 on August 30, 2016. He was paired with actress Marilu Henner. They were voted out on November 7, 2016, finishing in 6th place, tied for his lowest finish.

It was revealed on September 8, 2020, after a lot of rumors, that Hough would replace longtime DWTS judge Len Goodman. During the coronavirus pandemic, Goodman was unable to return for season 29. For the 30th season, he served as a judge.

In September 2019, Hough hosted a NBC special Reunion to Downton Abbey: A Grand Event. Hough underwent emergency surgery to remove his appendix as a result of appendicitis; he also posted a video of himself performing with Hayley Erbert post-surgery.
