Early life and influences
When he was 13 years old, Demirkan began playing guitar and performed with various youth bands in college. Demir, a 1990 Istanbul-born musician, formed Mezarkabul, a heavy-rock band, and performed guitar and drums on the group's second album, Trail Blazer.
In 1992, he moved to Los Angeles, where he studied with Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, and Paul Hanson, who founded the MI-Musician's Institute.
In 1996, he returned to Istanbul and performed as a producer, guitarist, and composer for many artists, including Sebnem Ferah and Sertab Erener. Demir returned to Mezarkabul in 1997 and released the Anatolia album.
Career
Demirkan played his first guitar at the age of 13, and gained international recognition in 1990 when he joined Mezarkabul's Istanbul heavy rock band as a singer and guitarist. Paul Hanson, a 1992 graduate of Musician's Institute in Los Angeles, studied with Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, and MI founder Paul Hanson, who performed in studio and live shows.
Demir's eponymous debut solo album with Sony Music was released in 2000. In 2002 and 2004, Dunya Benim's (The World is Mine) and 2004 Istanbul followed. After his success with Mike Tramp (Whitelion), the former visited in 11 European countries.
Demir's Sertab Erener songs were well-reced in Europe and Turkey. "Every Way That I Can," one of these songs, received the first prize in the 2003 Eurovision Song Competition and has sold 400,000 units around the world.
Demirkan has also written television jingles and composed soundtracks for television and film. The music he composed for the documentary about Gallipoli/Gelibolu in 2005 was one of Demirkan's most notable performances. The soundtrack featured ethnic strings recorded in Turkey as well as classical songs performed by a symphonic orchestra and choir in the Czech Republic. It was also available in Turkey and Australia.
Sertab Erener and Demirkan embarked on the international project Painted on Water together. Demir and Jay Newland, a Grammy-winning producer (Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me"), co-produced this innovative work entitled Ebru, which was released on Motéma Music.
"The Los Angeles experience influenced the current project in a variety of ways, not least the fact that "the L.A. vibe is fantastic for art," Demirkan says. "I was walking in Hollywood every day and I wanted to record an album there." We were trying to find Painted on Water because they'd changed to Hanson because they were ready to record Painted on Water. Every time I passed by, I told myself that I'd be there and record, so it was a great moment, a dream come true."
