College career

Campbell played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 2013 to 2015. He appeared at Hutchinson Community College in junior college. He had 39 total tackles, three tackles-for-loss, and one tackled for fumble as a sophomore in the 2013 season. He had 75 tackles, 6.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, one intercept, one pass blocked, and three fumble recoveries in the 2014 season. He had 92 tackles, 6.5 tackles-for-loss, four sacks, one intercept, three passes shielded, and two tackles were forced fumbles in his final collegiate season in 2015.

Professional career

Campbell was chosen by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. Campbell was the second linebacker drafted by the Falcons in 2016, behind LSU's Deion Jones. He was also the 16th overall linebacker drafted in 2016.

Campbell was signed by the Atlanta Falcons to a four-year, $2.90 million deal, with a signing bonus of $565,528.

Campbell began training camp by promising to be a starting linebacker against Sean Weatherspoon and Philip Wheeler. Campbell, alongside Deion Jones and Vic Beasley, was named as the starting weakside linebacker for the regular season by head coach Dan Quinn.

In their 31–24 loss, he made his professional debut and his first appearance in the Atlanta Falcons' season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Campbell sustained an ankle injury during training on September 16, 2016. He was sidelined by his ankle injury for the next four games (Weeks 2–5). During a 33–30 loss to the San Diego Chargers on October 23, 2016, Campbell recorded a season-high ten combined tackles (six solo) on October 23, 2016. During a 38-19 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on November 27, 2016, Campbell made four solo tackles, along with his first career interception. Campbell made his first interception appearance in his career while outstripping tight end Jermaine Gresham, the Cardinals' quarterback, on a pass attempt to seal the Cardinals' victory in the fourth quarter. Campbell was inactive during the Falcons' Week 16 victory over the Carolina Panthers after suffering a concussion the previous week. He finished his rookie season in 2016 with 48 combined tackles (35 solo), seven passes defensed, one forced fumble, one called fumble, and one intercept in 11 games and ten starts.

The Atlanta Falcons finished first in the NFC South with an 11–5 record in 2016 and earned a first round bye. Campbell's first appearance in playoff games and four combined tackles were recorded during a 36-20 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Divisional Round on January 14, 2017. The Falcons defeated the Green Bay Packers 44-22 in the NFC Championship Game next week. Campbell got off to Super Bowl LI and made four total tackles against the Falcons, who beat the New England Patriots 34-28 in overtime on February 5, 2017.

The Atlanta Falcons fired defensive coordinator Richard Smith after losing a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl LI and allowing the New England Patriots to score 31 points in the second half of the game. The Atlanta Falcons announced on February 10, 2017, they had promoted secondary coach Marquand Manuel to defensive coordinator. After Vic Beasley was moved closer to a defensive end role in training camp, Campbell was billed as the starting strongside linebacker. Campbell was named the starting strongside linebacker for the regular season by head coach Dan Quinn, as well as poorside linebacker Duke Riley and middle linebacker Deion Jones.

During a 34-23 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, Campbell had eight combined tackles, deflected a pass, and made his first tackle sack on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In a 27–7 win over the Dallas Cowboys, he had a season-high 13 combined tackles. Campbell appeared in all 16 games in 2017 and had 92 total tackles (61 solo), four pass deflections, and two sacks.

Campbell, Duke Riley, and Deion Jones were among the starting strongside linebackers to start 2018 as the starting strongside linebacker. He appeared in 16 games with 13 starts, finishing with a team-leading 94 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Campbell also scored a team-high 17 tackles in Week 4 against the Tennessee Titans, defeating the 24–10 loss. Campbell defeated the Carolina Panthers in Week 11 with a team-high 11 tackles and intercepted a pass made by Kyle Allen in a 29–3 victory. Campbell fumbled on running back Matt Breida, who regained possession in Week 15 against the San Francisco 49ers, defeating him 29–22.

Campbell agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals on April 3, 2020.

Campbell was fired as a Cardinal on Tua Tagovailoa during the 34-31 loss in Week 9 against the Miami Dolphins for his first sacking. He played in all 16 games for the first time on the team and 2.0 sacks.

Campbell signed with the Green Bay Packers on June 9, 2021. Along with Krys Barnes, he was named the starting linebacker for the inside linebacker.

Campbell scored an interception by Lions quarterback Jared Goff in a 35–17 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 2. In a 25–22 overtime victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, he recorded his second interception on the season as he intercepted an errant pass fired by Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow in the first play of the extra period.

For his appearances during the month of October, he received the NFC Defensive Player of the Month award.

Campbell was named a first-team member of the 2021 All-Pro Team on January 14, 2022, becoming the first Packers inside the linebacker to receive this award since Ray Nitschke in 1966. He was PFF's second-best graded linebacker, behind Dallas Cowboys Micah Parsons.

Campbell re-signed with the Packers on a five-year contract worth $50 million on March 17, 2022. Campbell intercepted Taylor Heinicke's pass on October 23, 2022, his first NFL touchdown since losing to the Washington Commanders in Week 7.
