Dave Gahan Career

Career in Depeche Mode (1980–present)

Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher, and Vince Clarke formed Composition of Sound in March 1980, with Clarke on vocals and guitar, Gore on keyboards, and Fletcher on bass. Clarke and Fletcher soon switched to synthesizers. After Clarke heard Gahan perform David Bowie's "Heroes" that year, the band reformed. After Gahan's discovery of a fashion magazine called Dépêche-mode, the band was renamed Depeche Mode. Depeche Mode, a new wave/synthpop pioneer of the early 1980s, has released 14 studio albums, four greatest hits compilations, and two remix albums. In excess of 100 million units worldwide, the band has sold over a million albums. On Billboard's Alternative Songs chart, four of the band's singles have reached number one: "Enjoy the Silence" (1990), "Policy of Truth" (1993), and "Walking in My Shoes" (1993).

"I became a bit angry that there was a lack of experiments during Exciter's construction," Gahan said in a 2003 interview. This led him to tell his friends in 2004 that he wanted to write half of the songs on their forthcoming album, but there was "no way" he could be involved in the band without being a writer. There was eventually a compromise, and three of Gahan's songs, "Suffer Well" (nominated for a Grammy award), "I Want It All" and "Nothing's Impossible," were among the entries on Playing the Angel. In 2006, "Suffer Well" was first released as a single, peaking at No. 1. In the United Kingdom, there are 12 out of 12. Although Gahan wrote the lyrics to the B-side "Oh Well," the song was also written by Martin Gore. It was their first writing collaboration.

Dave Valiant, the Damned's frontman, influences Gahan's persona on stage. David Bowie, James Brown, Elvis Presley, and Prince have all been credited with influences, according to him.

ADRIAN THRILLS: After seven years, Metallica (and those histrionic solos) is making a good comeback

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 14, 2023
ADRIAN THRILLS: When celebrities contributed to a tribute album last year, celebrities from all around the music industry revealed their admiration for Metallica. According to the Metallica Blacklist, the San Francisco-based actors are the ultimate standard-bearers for stadium-ready heavy metal. Who could argue with a fan club that includes Miley Cyrus, Phoebe Bridgers and Dave Gahan? But the band, who have released 125 million albums and headlined Glastonbury, didn't get to the top by hopping between genres. They have dabbled with acoustic guitars, blues, and symphonic strings, but they haven't changed to the model that gave them their triumph in the 1980s. The quartet's line-up has been unusually stable. They were joined by Danish-born drummer Lars Ulrich and singer James Hetfield in 1981, and bassist Robert Trujillo in 2003.

The hunt for the ever-elusive "bop" isn't as easy. Playlists and streaming-service recommendations can only do so much. They often leave a lingering question: Are these songs really good, or are they just new? Enter Bop Shop, a hand-picked collection of songs from the MTV News staff. This weekly collection doesn't discriminate by gender and can include anything — it's a snapshot of what's on our minds and what sounds good. We'll keep it fresh with the most recent hits, but we'll all remember a few oldies (but goodies) every once in a while. Get ready: The Bop Shop is now open for business.
