Daryl Frank Dragon (August 27, 1942 – January 2, 2019) was an American singer and songwriter who performed as Captain from the pop musical pair Captain & Tennille with his then-wife, Toni Tennille.
Personal life
Toni Tennille's husband had died of familial tremor in late 2009. Tennille's illness was neither debilitating nor terminal, according to Tennille. Rather, his apparent tremor was exacerbated by fatigue and anxiety. The tremor condition limited the majority of Dragon's public appearances. Toni Tennille revealed in November 2009 that Dragon was under a physician's care to determine the best course of his treatment.
Tennille described her husband's illness as "a medical disorder" that causes him to have tremors in September 2010. Tennille said that the illness was debilitating to Dragon's potential as a singer.
After 39 years of marriage, Tennille applied for divorce from Dragon in Arizona on January 16, 2014. Dragon said he was unaware of this until he was served with divorce papers. "I don't know why Toni applied for divorce," Dragon, who was interviewed by TMZ on January 22, 2014, said.
The Washington Post announced on January 23, 2014 that health problems may have caused the divorce, because both topics had been addressed in divorce papers filed with the court. Tennille had posted on her blog in 2010 that her husband's medical disorder was characterized by such tremors that he could no longer play keyboards.
In July 2014, the divorce was finalized. Tennille's memoirs characterized their marriage as "loveless and lacking physical contact.
Dragon denied reading his ex-wife's new memoirs "No, I haven't read it." "I was drugged [at the time of my divorce] — that's all I can tell you" in an interview on March 17, 2016.
Tennille announced her divorce from Dragon on April 12, 2016, citing Dragon's "inability to be affectionate" as the reason for the split. Dragon had responded positively to the Today segment, telling her, "I saw you on The Today Show," Tennille later told her. "I was proud of you."
Dragon's interview in a People magazine published in February 2017, he was making good strides and feeling like himself again, after changes were made in the dosage of medications he was taking, which had been causing side effects. The dragon said that his ex-wife had flown to Arizona and had been a big help in his transformation.
Dragon died in Prescott, Arizona, aged 76, on January 2, 2019, with Tennille by his side.
Career
Dragon was the son of Eloise (Rawitzer), conductor, and arranger Carmen Dragon, as well as Dennis Dragon's elder brother, a founding member of the 1960s surf band The Surf Punks. Danny Thomas, a comedian and actor, was his godfather.
Dragon's familiar face and stage name came from his time as a keyboard player with The Beach Boys from 1967 to 1972. Mike Love, the lead singer of the Beach Boys, gave him the nickname "Captain Keyboard"; it stuck; the Dragon began wearing a nautical captain's hat to go along with the name. Dragon, as Captain in Captain & Tennille, was often quiet and a man of few words, playing a foil to his outgoing, vivacious wife, Toni Tennille.
