Darren Lyndon Espanto (born May 24, 2001) is a Filipino-Canadian singer.

He first entered a competition at the age of ten, where he secured the Pinoy Singing Sensation competition in Edmonton's Masters Finals.

He made his first television appearance at the same age when he began working on YTV's reality television Show The Next Star in 2012, becoming the youngest finalist in the show's history to be ranked in the Top 6;

Despite this, he came to fame after appearing on The Voice Kids Philippines' first season.

Personal life

Espanto was born in Calgary on May 24, 2001. He is the first child of Filipino registered nurses Marinel Gonzales and Lyndon Espanto, who immigrated to Canada from Isabela. His parents instilled Filipino words, particularly Tagalog. Espanto began performing at the age of three. He had been keen on singing from a young age, and his parents were supportive of his aspirations.

Espanto serenaded his parents with the music of Hakuna Matata from The Lion King, which led to him recognizing his singing abilities and encouraging him to pursue and hone his raw talent as a child.

Espanto, a 12-year-old student at St. Jude Elementary in Calgary, before heading to the Philippines in 2014 for The Voice Kids. After passing the auditions, he returned to Canada to write his advanced test in St. Cyril School. He returned to the Philippines later in the decade. Espanto and the other The Voice Kids finalists were awarded a 350,000 scholarship from Eton International School. He went to Eton International School and later began homeschooling at The Homeschool of Asia Pacific, a Sanston Academy (Texas) affiliate, where he completed his senior high school with distinctions. He was given second honors in Grade 11. He graduated in Grade 12 with first honors and two prestigious awards, i.e., the Achiever Award and the Excellence in Music and Arts Award.

Espanto won in the Main Edition Finals of the Pinoy Singing Sensation competition in Edmonton on August 20, 2011.

In 2012, ten-year-old Espanto auditioned for the fifth season of YTV's reality show The Next Star, singing Bruno Mars' "Grenade." Keshia Chanté, one of the judges, became emotional and told him that his voice was 'unbelievable' and'controlled'. On the other hand, judge Mark Spicoluk said he'lacked stage presence.' However, when Chante asked him if he was interested, she and Tara Oram replied yes, earning him the 'golden ticket.'

He continued to be voted into the Top 6 for pop songs, including Rihanna's "Only Girl (in the World)" and Maroon 5's "Payphone" among others. Besides the other five finalists, he had his own single and music video titled "Gotta Give A Little More," as well as two other singles, "Now" and "Oh Yes Santa" for the other five finalists. He ultimately lost to 14-year-old Brooklyn Roebuck after performing his own song in the finals. He was the youngest finalist to be ranked in the top 6 in the show's history.

Espanto sang Jessie J's "Domino" during the inaugural season of ABS-CBN's The Voice Kids, which aired on June 1, 2014, while he formerly appeared on "The Next Star at age 11.
