Susan Aglukark Life

Susan Aglukark, (born 27 January 1967), is an Inuit musician whose blend of Inuit folk music styles with country and pop songwriting has made her a leading recording artist in Canada.

"O Siem" was her most popular song/single, gaining No. 1 on the charts. In 1995, there were 1 on the Canadian country and adult contemporary charts.

She has released seven studio albums and has received three Juno Awards.

Early life

Aglukark was born in Churchill, Manitoba, and raised in Arviat, Northwest Territories (now Nunavut). She suffered sexual assault as an infant and has been outspoken about it in several of Northern Ontario's first countries. She began working in Ottawa, Ontario, as an linguist with the Department of Indian & Northern Affairs, and then returned to the Northwest Territories to work as an executive assistant with the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada.

She began performing as an entertainer in Inuit communities and soon became a hit performer. She attracted the attention of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, who included her in a group of Arctic performers. Arctic Rose, she's a 1992 release of an independent album. She signed to a major record label the year after, and that year, she released an album of Christmas songs.

Aglukark has served as spokesperson for several non-profit organizations that support aboriginal and Inuit youth, including writing workshops for Attawapiskat First Nation youth and her involvement in Northern Canada's food crisis. However, she has said that although she is proud to be a role model for aboriginal people in Canada, she ultimately sees herself as an artist with a universal message of self-respect and tenacity to which people from all cultures can relate.

This Child, which was released in 1995, was her first album. That album's first single, "O Siem," debuted at number one on the Canadian adult contemporary and country charts this year, making Aglukark the first Inuk performer to have a Top 40 hit. "Hina Na Ho (Celebration)" and "Breakin' Down" became hit singles as well as "Breaking Down." In Canada, the album was eventually certified triple platinum (300,000 copies sold).

With "One Turn Deserves Another" in 2000, Aglukark created Unsung Heroes, which resulted in another pop hit. "Turn of the Century," a Nunavut song on CD, was also included on this album. Big Feeling was released in 2004.

In her songs, she often deals with painful topics. "Kathy" is about her niece who died by suicide, and "Still Running" is about sexual abuse. In Inuktitut, Aglukark has also recorded a version of "Amazing Grace" by Aglukark.
