Cornelius Nyungura (born 24 March 1977) is a singer who performs under the name Corneille.

He was born in West Germany to Rwandan parents and spent the majority of his childhood in Rwanda before moving to Quebec, Canada in 1997.

He performs both French and English.

Prince, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder inspired his work greatly by American funk and soul music; his work is heavily influenced by American funk and soul music.

Early life

Corneille was born in Freiburg, Germany, but he spent a significant portion of his childhood in Rwanda. He discovered his passion for music in 1993 and joined an R&B band that lifted the Découverte 1993 competition. He was also introduced to songwriting and musical composition during this period. However, his life was changed after the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Émile Nyungura's father, who was opposed to the government and, therefore, a threat; Corneille was assassinated with his parents, three brothers, and sisters when he was 17 years old. He escaped to Germany, where several of his parents' relatives took him in.

Personal life

In 2006, Corneille married Canadian model and actress Sofia de Medeiros; they now have one child.

Career

Corneille left Germany in order to pursue communication research, and enrolled Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He formed O.N.E., an R&B band, with Pierre Gage and Gardy Martin, whom he had met shortly after arriving in Quebec. Zoukin, one of the group's songs written by Corneille, earned first place in Canadian airplay. Corneille left the company early in 2001, deciding to pursue a solo career. He began to center his songs on his experiences. Corneille worked on several projects during 2002. He wrote and produced "Ce soir" for the Cocktail R&B 2 compilation (Ghetto R&B, Sony Music), and "Si Only on s'aimait" for Hip Hop Follies (Sony Music). Dave Stewart invited him to perform at his first show at the Réservoir in Paris and had the opportunity to perform with Jimmy Cliff. In January 2003, he was invited to appear as an opening act for Cunnie Williams at the Olympia.

On September 10, 2002, Corneille's first album, the Canadian version of Parce qu'on vient de loin, was released. On the second disc, the French version, which featured numerous bonus segments, was quickly adopted and became a hit. Corneille performed with Craig David in April 2003, repeating a line in French in the song Rise and Fall. He began his tour in May 2003 in Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux, playing to full houses. The singer appeared in Africa Live, which was held in March 2005 to fight against (malaria) paludism. This was the first time he had returned to his homeland continent after the genocide. Les marchands de rêves, Corneille's second album, was released in November 2005. Corneille has worked with the Canadian Red Cross to raise the profile of children who have been victims of war. In July 2007, Cornelius' birth was his first English-language album. In late 2014, he became a contestant on the fifth season of the French television network TF1's Danse avec les Stars.

In 2022, he was selected to be in "Manie Musicale" and won the tournament.

After qualifying to represent France in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006, Corneille wrote the song "Il était temps" for Virginie Pouchain. The song came in 22nd out of 24 finalists.
