Darren Bent Career

Club career

Since considering a career in athletics, Bent progressed through Ipswich Town's youth program, joining the club at the age of 14 in 1998. On July 2, 2001, he began a new career with Ipswich. He made his first-team debut in a 3–1 victory over Helsingborg in the UEFA Cup on November 1, 2001, and scored his first senior goal in a 4–1 loss to Newcastle United on November 27, 2001. In a 1–0 victory over Middlesbrough on April 24, 2002, Bent scored his first Premier League goal. He played in all leagues for seven appearances and two goals, and his team Ipswich also saw relegation to the First Division in 2001-02.

During the 2002–03 season, he was a key member of the Ipswich first-team squad. In a 1–1 draw with Millwall on August 24, he scored his first goal of the season, scoring the equalizing goal. He scored the winning goal against Slovan Liberec in the UEFA Cup on October 31, 2002. In a 2–0 victory over Norwich City in the East Anglian derby on March 2, he scored in a 2–0 victory. Bent won the Young Player of the Year award in Ipswich, while still receiving the Young Player of the Year award.

On June 13, 2003, Bent agreed to a new Ipswich contract, extending his contract until June 2006. During the 2003–04 season, he appeared on a regular basis. In a 3–1 victory over Walsall on March 16, he scored a hat-trick. Ipswich finished 5th in the league in the 2003-2004 season, losing out to West Ham United on two legs in the play-offs, with Bent scoring the winning goal in the first leg as Ipswich defeated 1–0 at Portman Road before losing the second leg 0–2. Bent was the top-scoer of Ipswich's season with 16 goals.

During the following season, he helped Ipswich maintain their promotion by returning to goal scoring form with strike partner Shefki Kuqi. Ipswich finished 3rd in the 2004-05 season, barely missing out on automatic promotion by two points, before losing to West Ham United in the play-off semi-finals for the second straight season. He scored 20 goals on the season, finishing joint top goalscorer with Shefki Kuqi.

Bent made a £2.5 million move to Charlton Athletic on June 1st, but if he made an agreed number of appearances for Charlton and England, the fee would have risen to £3 million. Bent scored two goals on his Charlton debut against Sunderland on August's first day of the Premier League season, and he was named Premier League Player of the Month for August. He made his first four appearances for the club, being one of only six players to accomplish this feat in the Premier League. Bent was the best scoring Englishman in the Premier League in 2005-2006, scoring 18 goals (22 overall), making him third highest scorer and receiving Charlton's Player of the Year award. In July, he signed a deal with Charlton, which had not promised him until June 2010. Bent scored 13 goals in the Premier League in 2006-07, again finishing as Charlton's top goalscorer in the top league, but was unable to prevent them from being relegated to the Championship after seven seasons of Premier League football. Charlton accepted a bid from West Ham United for him in June 2007, but Bent was not keen on a transfer to the club.

On June 29, 2007, Bent made a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record fee of £16.5 million, which would be payable over three years and includes add-on payments. The club was entitled to 20% of Charlton's income on Bent under a sell-on clause, which gave the club the club an initial £2.58 million. In a 4–0 home victory over Derby County in August 2007, he scored his first competitive goal for Tottenham. In the first round of the UEFA Cup, scoring was followed by scoring in the 6–1 win over Anorthos Famagusta on September 20, 2007. After extra time, Bent was an ineffective substitute for the 2008 League Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. In the midst of a 4–0 league win over West Ham, he scored his 100th goal in his career career on March 9, 2008. In a 2–0 victory over Portsmouth on March 22nd, he scored his 100th goal to be scored at White Hart Lane since 2007-08. Bent scored one more goal against Newcastle United in 2007, which he defeated with 36 appearances and 8 goals.

During the 2008-09 pre-season, Bent scored 12 goals for Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea's first league goal of the season came against his team, who lost 1–1 to Chelsea. In the second half of Tottenham's UEFA Cup first round match against Wis' Kraków, he scored a header, giving the team a 2–1 victory. Bent scored his first competitive hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, a match against Dinamo Zagreb. In a 2–1 win over Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium, he continued this up with two goals.

During a home match against Portsmouth in January 2009, where Tottenham two points cost Tottenham Hotspur, manager Harry Redknapp said, "You will never get a better chance to win a game than that." That one may have been "missus" in my case. Bent scored two goals in the Reebok Stadium over two minutes against Bolton Wanderers in a match that ended as a 3–2 loss. Following Robbie Keane's return to Tottenham Hotspur, Redknapp assured Bent of his future at the club. With 17 goals in 43 games, he finished the season as Tottenham's top goalscorer.

In July 2009, Sunderland began talks to sign Bent. The transfer seemed postponed, and on Twitter, Bent accused club chairman Daniel Levy of disrupting his transfer to Sunderland, although Bent later apologised, citing a sense of annoyance. After agreeing a fee with Tottenham, Bent signed for Sunderland on August 5th for an initial fee of £10 million plus additional payments, which later increased to £16.5 million. He scored on his Sunderland debut, the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Bolton, and Sunderland's first goal against Chelsea in a 3–1 loss. In the 4–1 victory over Hull City, he scored a brace for his third and fourth goals in five matches.

Sunderland beat Burnley on Turf Moor, scoring 1–1 and losing 3–1. He scored again in a 5–2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was left angry at Bent's decision to give Sunderland's second penalty kick to teammate Kenwyne Jones after the latter "pleaded" with Bent so he could get on the score sheet. Bent scored in a 1–0 victory over Liverpool on October 17, 2009, when a Liverpool fan kicked a beach ball into the field and past confused goalkeeper Pepe Reina into the net. In a 4–0 win over Bolton on March 9, he scored his first hat-trick for Sunderland. In a 3–1 victory over former Tottenham Hotspur on 3 April, he scored two goals, one a penalty, but they missed two other penalties. Bent scored 25 goals in 40 appearances in all leagues, 24 of which were in the Premier League, contributing to 50% of Sunderland's 48 goals this season. He was named Sunderland's Player of the Year.

Bent made his first appearance of 2010-11 in the first round of a 2–2 draw with Birmingham City on August 14th, but the game was tied for the first minute with a penalty. Sunderland defeated Manchester City 1–0 on August 29 with a winning goal thanks to a stoppage time penalty. Sunderland defeated Arsenal 1-1 in 19 September after Bent scored equalizer during stoppage time. In Sunderland's 2–2 draw at Liverpool, he scored twice.

Bent made a transfer request on January 17, 2011, despite Aston Villa's announcement that a club-record £18 million bid for him was turned down. Villa then made an amended bid of £18 million, potentially increasing to £24 million, which was then accepted. Bent completed his move to Villa and agreed to a four-and-a-half-year contract the following day. In a 1–0 victory over Villa Park, he scored on his debut against Manchester City. In a 3–1 away loss, Bent scored his second Villa goal in his third appearance for his team. In Villa's 2–1 away victory over Arsenal in the penultimate match of the season on May 15, Bent scored both of his goals. After he chested down a Kyle Walker chipped pass, the first was a well-crafted volley, with the second coming a few minutes later after Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen allowed Ashley Young the time to thread a pass through the Gunners' defense and Bent to sidefoot home for 2–0. Despite joining Villa in January, he scored 9 goals in 16 Premier League appearances, becoming the club's joint top-scorer with Ashley Young. He was also the top English goalscorer in the Premier League, and the fourth highest scorer overall this season, with 17 goals, eight of which were scored for Sunderland.

Bent scored his first goal of the season against Blackburn Rovers in a 3–1 victory on August 20. Every time he touched the ball, he was booed by the home support in his first match against former Sunderland, a 2–2 draw at the Stadium of Light on October 29, 2011. As a result, Bent sustained an injury during the match against Bolton and was forced to miss the next two matches. When a fan claimed that the striker was out shopping when his teammates were losing 2–0 to Liverpool, Bent caused controversy. Bent was sent home to recover from his injury, and after that he apologized to the Villa fans for his behavior. Villa boss Alex McLeish reacted angrily to Bent's absence for Villa after apologizing. This resulted in Bent's having to deny a fall out with McLeish. In the match against Chelsea on December 31, 2011, Bent made his return as a 78th-minute replacement, scoring the third goal to win by 3–1 at Stamford Bridge on December 31. Bent continued his string by scoring in the next four games for Villa, including his first FA Cup goal in a Villa shirt against Arsenal on 29 January 2012 in an eventual 3–2 loss. Villa came from behind to win a 2–2 home draw against Queens Park Rangers three days later. Bent scored his 100th Premier League goal in 100 days. He was the 21st player to reach the milestone.

After tangling with Antoln Alcaraz, Bent landed awkwardly on his ankle on February 25, 2012, in a match against Wigan Athletic. He was stretched out of the field with what seemed to be a serious injury. It was announced two days later after Bent's ankle scan revealed that he had ruptured ligaments. He was out for three months, putting an end to his season with Villa and most likely his chance to play at UEFA Euro 2012. Bent had recovered from his injury by mid-May and was in contention for Villa's final match of 2011–12 against Norwich City but was eventually disqualified. Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 England team was also given the chance of naming new England manager Roy Hodgson. In the hopes of being chosen to participate in the tournament, Bent promised to prove his fitness to Hodgson. Bent scored ten goals in 25 appearances and vowed to stay on the team once more.

Bent scored his first goal of 2012–13 in a 3–0 victory over Tranmere Rovers in the second round of the League Cup on August 28, his first goal for Villa since February 2012. After Bent was appointed captain for the 2–0 victory over Swansea City on September 15th, 2012 and thereafter, he lost the Villa captaincy to Ron Vlaar. In a 4–1 loss to Southampton, he scored his first league goal of the season on September 22nd. After Gabriel Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke's good work against Manchester City in the midweek League Cup, Bent was unable to start for the next league match against West Bromwich Albion. However, Bent scored the equalizer in a 1–1 draw after coming on for Benteke as a 68th-minute replacement.

On August 16, 2013, Bent joined Fulham in Villa's Premier League on a season-long loan. He scored his first goal for Fulham on his debut in August 23, 18 minutes after losing 3–1 at home to London rivals Arsenal. Adel Taarabt won by 2–1 home victory over Everton in the third round of the League Cup on September 24th, just three minutes after coming home. Dimitar Berbatov, a late replacement, scored the only goal in Fulham's home league win over Stoke City on October 5th, taking over Pajtim Kasami's shot and beating Robert Huth once more.

Bent went 13 league games without scoring until winning a 2–2 draw against Manchester United after replacing Muamer Tankovi at halftime. Fulham were relegated to the Championship after finishing his loan with six goals in 30 games.

Bent joined Brighton & Hove Albion on a one-month loan on November 26, 2014. He scored on his debut for the Championship club three days later, defeating Fulham 2–1.

Bent was loaned to Derby County, another Championship team, after two goals in five appearances for Brighton. He was signed by his former international boss Steve McClaren to a contract that would continue through the season. He equalized in a 2–2 draw away from then league champion AFC Bournemouth on February 10, 2015, with his fourth goal in five matches. Derby finished eighth place in the Championship table after losing out on a play-off location by a single point. He was released by Aston Villa on June 8, 2015, ahead of his permanent transfer to Derby on a two-year deal with a one-year option.

Bent joined Burton Albion on loan for the remainder of the 2017-18 season from January 26th. After suffering from a pre-season hamstring injury, he was yet to make his first team appearance for Derby during the 2017-18 season. In a 3–1 loss away from Cardiff City on 30 March 18, he scored his first goal for Burton. Burton came from a goal down to win 2–1 on Sunday and condemn the former club to their second relegation in as many seasons as a result of two seasons. Bent scored a goal against his former club Sunderland. He was released by Derby at the end of the 2017-18 season.

On July 25, 2019, Bent announced his retirement from playing.

International career

In a 2–1 victory over Northern Ireland in the team's first match at the 1999 Victory Shield, Bent made his England national under-15 team's debut on October 15, 1999, as an 85th-minute replacement. He started the match on October 28th in 1999, scoring in the third minute as England defeated Wales 3-1. England defeated the tournament and scored once, leading the table with nine points. At the 2000 Ballymena Tournament, Bent was a member of the Under-15s, beginning in their first match against Switzerland on April 24th. He scored England's four goals in their 4–0 victory over Finland the next day. In England's 3–2 victory over Belgium on April 29, 2000, Bent scored in the seventh-place match. He had seven goals in eight appearances from 1999 to 2000 in his under-15 career.

Bent made his under-16 debut in their first match at the 2000 Nordic Cup on July 31th, starting as a substitute as England defeated Finland 2–1. In the 52nd minute of England's 3–0 victory over the Faroe Islands on August 3, 2000, he scored in the 52nd minute, before losing 3–0 by Sweden the following day. At the 2001 Algarve Tournament, Bent appeared as a replacement in the team's three matches after they were ruled out at the team level. From 2000 to 2001, he made 11 appearances and scored 3 goals for the under-16s.

In a 3–1 win, his debut for the under-19 team came on February 14, 2002, when he first faced Germany in a friendly, scoring two goals and scoring two goals. Bent scored in the 33rd minute of a 1–1 draw with Lithuania on April 17, 2002, securing England's qualification for the tournament. In 2002, he completed his time with the under-19s with three appearances and three goals.

Bent's first appearance for the under-21 squad came on February 11, 2003, as a 71st-minute replacement against Italy in a friendly in which England defeated Italy 1–0. His first goal came on his second appearance in a 3–2 victory over Serbia and Montenegro in a friendly on June 2nd. In the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification play-offs, he was involved in both legs of England's 3–2 aggregate loss to France in the second leg. This was his last game for the under-21s, completing his career with 14 appearances and 9 goals.

On August 17, 2005, Bent was called up to the senior England squad for the friendly against Denmark, but he did not participate in the game. He made his England debut against Uruguay in a pre-2006 FIFA World Cup friendly match against Anfield on March 1st. When it was announced in May 2006, he was not included in England's World Cup squad.

Despite having played for the senior team, Bent was recalled to the under-21 squad for the NBC qualifier against Germany in October 2006. He was called to the senior squad later this month due to an injury to Andrew Johnson immediately after the squad's announcement. In November 2007, he was called to the England squad for a UEFA Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia. England lost 3–2 and failed to qualify for the tournament, but he came on as an 80th-minute replacement. Following an injury to striker Carlton Cole, he was called up to the team for a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ukraine. In a 1–0 friendly loss to Brazil on November 14, 2009, he got off to a rocky start for England. Bent was selected in England's preliminary 30-man squad for the 2010 World Cup on May 11, 2010, but he was eventually dropped from the final 23-man squad on June 1st.

After appearing as a replacement for Jermain Defoe in a Euro 2012 qualifier on September 7, Bent scored his first international goal in England's 3–1 away win over Switzerland. Fabio Capello, then-England boss, expressed delight with Bent's all-round game since his World Cup retirement, including selection him in the starting 11 for England's friendly with Denmark, where he received a tap-in from a Theo Walcott cross. Bent remained in England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales, his first competitive international appearance since being on March 26, 2011. In scoring England's second goal, he increased his tally to three goals in his last three matches. Bent recovered from injury in time, but he was left out of the final 23-man squad for Euro 2012 as then-England boss Roy Hodgson believed that Bent would not be fit enough to participate in the tournament.

Despite Nick Ball's two knockdowns in Riyadh, the two players fought to a split draw

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 8, 2024
On the Anthony Joshua versus Francis Ngannou undercard, fans believe Nick Ball was robbed after he defeated Rey Vargas to a split draw. Ball, who was down nearly half a foot in height and at least half as far in range, was uphill from the first bell in Riyadh. Ball struggled to execute his game in the early stages as Vargas confidently controlled the range, chastising the Liverpudlian as he tried to close the distance.

As the 16-time World Champion honors his 'fantastic' youth for returning to darts, Phil 'The Power' Taylor 'does not want to play' Luke Littler if it's an exhibition on his terms

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 15, 2024
Phil 'The Power' Taylor of Darts has no intention of playing Luke Littler unless it's in a show on his terms. The Stoke-born maestro ruled the game for more than 30 years, winning a record 16 World Championships before withdrawing from the sport in 2018. Littler came to the darts stage after his triumphant run to the World Championship final at the start of the year, where he was defeated by Luke Humphries.

Darren Bent says he would select Kai Havertz from Arsenal over Marcus Rashford in his squad, but the former Premier League striker insists he has no idea what he's getting from him

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 30, 2023
Darren Bent, a former Premier League striker, would like Kai Havertz in his squad ahead of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford. Havertz joined Arsenal for £65 million in June, but the Gunners had only scored one penalty before last weekend, sparking outrage from supporters. However, he has scored in his last two appearances for Mikel Arteta's guys, while Rashford has only scored twice this season after scoring 30 goals last term. Rashford's lack of consistency is causing Bent to be concerned, and he'd prefer Havertz over him for this reason.
