Guillaume Hoarau Career

Club career

Hoarau started his football career at JS Saint-Pierroise in his home country, Réunion. Le Havre AC scouts deemed him too "thin" in 1995 and signed his then-teammate Florent Sinama Pongolle. Hoarau signed his first professional deal for Le Havre in January 2004, after attracting the attention of then-Le Havre chief Jean-François Domergue. In a 2–1 loss against Châteauroux on May 12, he made his league debut on Sunday, being brought on as a replacement.

Despite being signed, Hoarau spent the majority of his time under Domergue, receiving brief call-ups to the senior squad and then being sent back. In a 2–1 win over Amiens in just his second match of the 2004-05 season, he scored his first career goal. Despite this, his performance was severely limited after Domergue's dismissal and the appointment of temporary manager Philippe Hinschberger. His playing time increased during the new season under new coach Thierry Uvenard; he appeared in 28 games, scoring five goals. He made five appearances for Le Havre before being sent on loan to Gueugnon, where he made 21 appearances and scored eight goals.

Hoarau was installed as the lead striker under new boss Jean-Marc Nobilo, his fourth in four years. He appeared in all 38 league games and scored at least one goal in 12-straight games at one time during the season. His success earned him the nickname "Karim Benzema of Ligue 2" in French, as Benzema was having a similar season in Ligue 1. His exploits at several Ligue 1 clubs, including Auxerre, Marseille, and Paris Saint-Germain, to name a few, as well as English clubs Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, and Chelsea, who likened the player to Peter Crouch. Hoarau had signed with Paris Saint-Germain on a four-year contract before reportedly snubbing the club's main rival, Marseille. PSG paid Le Havre a €500,000 fee and also allowed him to complete the Ligue 2 season with his former club, whom he helped win promotion to Ligue 1.

Hoarau's first appearance in Paris during the Ligue 2 season with high hopes, as he was expected to replace club legend Pauleta and live up to remarks made by former President Alain Cayzac, who referred to Hoarau as the "signing of the century" for PSG.

In a 1–0 loss to Monaco on September 9, 2008, he made his Monaco debut. Hoarau responded in the second week with his first goal for the team on his home debut over Bordeaux after going scoreless in the first week. On October 26, 2008, his breakthrough into the team came against a rival, Marseille. Hoarau scored a brace as the team beat Hoarau 4–2 in a big 4–2 win. In a 3–1 victory, he capped it off with another brace, this time against Le Havre, his former team. Le Mans defeated him in their second straight victory, earning another brace. Hoarau also showed his good form on the European stage in his club's first leg match against VfL Wolfsburg on February 18, 2009, the 2008–09 European Football Cup came to an end. Hoarau made 47 appearances, 32 in league play, and 17 in league play, contributing to the club's successful season in which they finished second in the league and advanced to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Hoarau was linked to a number of clubs, most notably Lyon, who charged €10 million for the player's services due to his outstanding results. Both Hoarau and PSG, on the other hand, downplayed the bid, and Hoarau signed a contract extension until 2013.

Hoarau failed to resurrect the same form after a fruitful first season in Paris. When both players were injured and profligate in front of goal whenever they managed to play, the arrival of Mevlüt Erdinç failed to spark a fruitful partnership. In the 2010 Coupe de France Final, Hoarau did however score the winning goal for PSG in extra time. Both Hoarau and Erdinç were relegated to the substitutes' bench after the 2011-2012 season, with the former suffering a serious injury on the first day. Hoarau was associated with a loan transfer to Saint-Étienne. Hoarau sustained an injury in a match against Lorient on the last day of the 2011–12 season, with Montpellier and PSG both aiming for the Ligue 1 trophy. Montpeillier went on to win their first league title.

Despite being out of contract at the end of the season, Hoarau spent less for the club and was put on the transfer list in the 2012–2013 season.

Following his transfer to Dalin Aerbin, Hoarau made a farewell address and was left emotional at Parc des Princes, where he said, "Nothing has changed." I'm a little excited. I have a small tear in the eye.

Hoarau joined Chinese Super League side Dalian Aerbin on January 9, 2013. He was announced by the club on the same day. Commentator Jean-Michel Larqué's reaction to China's transfer to China sparked outrage.

In a 1–0 loss against Shandong Luneng, Hoarau made his debut in the season's first game of the season, arriving as a backup in the 69th minutes. In a 3–3 draw against newly promoted Shanghai East Asia, Hoarau scored his first goal three weeks later, on March 30. In a 2–1 loss to reigning league champion Guangzhou Evergrande two weeks later, Hoarau scored twice more on April 14, 2013 in a 2–1 loss. Despite being drafted as the first team regular, Hoarau later failed to score. The club has drafted Nabil Baha as their new striker, despite the club considering selling Hoarau during the summer transfer window due to his lack of scoring. Hoarau will remain with the club for the remainder of the season and will help the club finish in fifth place in the league table.

Hoarau was one of many international players to leave Dalian Aerbin after the 2013 season, according to Chinese media Sina Sports. Hoarau's departure, who would return to France, will be confirmed four days later.

Hoarau returned to France after a one-year with Beijing in China, joining Bordeaux Ligue 1 until the 2013-2014 season. Hoarau was also linked to Marseille prior to the move. Hoarau's planned move to Marseille didn't go well, as Hoarau preferred going somewhere else.

Hoarau left Bordeaux and joined Swiss side BSC Young Boys in the summer of 2014.

He was a member of the Young Boys squad, which won the 2017-18 Swiss Super League for the first time in 32 years.

Hoarau scored goals in both legs against Dinamo Zagreb, which took Young Boys to the group stages for the first time ever in the Champions League play-off round of the season. In the final group game on December 12, he scored twice more, giving a surprise 2–1 win over Italian giants Juventus. Despite winning, Young Boys finished last in the league on four points.

Hoarau joined Sion, a Swiss side, on September 18, 2020.

Hoarau, a 38-year-old boy, announced his retirement from professional football in August 2022.

International career

Hoarau was called up to the French national team on Sunday to replace the injured Nicolas Anelka in the squad's squad.
