Darden Smith Career

Career

Darden Smith was signed to a publishing contract by Dick James Music in 1986 after launching Native Soil. Epic Records signed Smith (1988), which released two country chart hit singles, “Little Maggie” and “Day After Tomorrow,” along with Nigel Grainge, the head of Ensign Records, introduced Smith to British singer Boo Hewerdine in 1987. They had eight songs and a record with Ensign/Chrysalis that resulted in Evidence (1989). Smith's record contract with Epic was changed to Columbia Records' pop division, "Midnight Train" and "Frankie & Sue," as well as Little Victories (1993), which included the Top 10 pop hit single "Loving Arms."

Smith left Columbia in 1995 and spent several years without an agent or label. He returned to recording through independent labels, which culminated in Deep Blue on Plump Records, and a trio of albums for Dualtone Records (Sunflower, 2002; Field of Crows, 2005). In 2007, He self-published a collection of his favorite songs from his previous albums, After All This Time, to Marathon (2010), a 15-track cycle of songs devoted to a small town in West Texas, that one reviewer characterized as "a peak in [Smith's] 25-year songwriting career. Everything on his 2017 album Everything was co-produced by Smith and Stewart Lerman and released on Compass Records. The Habit of Noticing: Making a Life (and a Living) (2018) was published by Irie Books. Western Skies (2022) is a multi-media project that includes a new studio album, a book of photography, lyrics, and essays. Western Skies - The Essays (2022) was the first word album to be released in 2022. Smith continues to write songs for his own albums as well as collaborating with other writers on other projects. He tours regularly, appearing in venues around America and the United Kingdom.
