Daler Singh (born 18 August 1967), also known as Daler Mehndi, is an Indian singer, poet, writer, and record producer.

He has been instrumental in the success of Bhangra internationally, as well as Indian pop music that is unrelated to Bollywood music.

He is best known for his dance numbers, voice, turban, and long flowing robes.

Early life

Daler Mehndi was born in Patna, Bihar, India, into a Sikh family. He formed his own group in 1991, involving his brothers, cousins, and acquaintances. In 1994 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, he was named the Voice of Asia International Ethnic and Pop Music Contest.

Personal life

Mehndi is the brother of singers Mika Singh and Shamsher Singh. Mehndi is married to Taranpreet Kaur. Gurdeep Mehndi, Ajit Kaur Mehndi, Prabhjot Kaur Mehndi, and Rabaab Kaur Mehndi are among his four children. His daughter Ajit Kaur Mehndi is married to Navraj Hans, the son of Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans. Gurdeep Mehndi married Jessica Singh, a student from Delhi, in 2014.

Mehndi Green Drive, which was introduced in the Delhi government's Special Task Force, was launched in 1998. Over 1.2 million saplings have been planted in and around Delhi.

Mehndi has performed for charity for Imran Khan's Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust in Pakistan and has raised $5 million. Mehndi supports charitable causes such as cancer, thalassemia, and HIV, and AIDS, and he has helped to bring up the homeless children of Kenya, as well as famine-stricken families in Kalahandi, India. He contributed to the Kargil Victims' Relief Fund, which was funded by the Indian government. Mehndi was one of the first celebrities to visit the soldiers at Kargil. Mehndi has built earthquake resistant houses for the Gujarat earthquake victims; he has donated money and performed to raise funds for Gujarat cyclone and quake victims as well as police welfare funds. In Vadodra, he has donated ten million dollars to the victims of the cyclone in the government aid fund. In the aftermath of the Gujarat earthquake in Doodhoya village, he took responsibility for the reconstruction of a block destroyed in the Gujarat earthquake.

Mehndi has founded a Mehndi Food for Life Society in Chander Vihar, Delhi, where a 24-hour kitchen provides food to the homeless and the homeless. Mehndi has designed a Gurudwara Bhanjani Sahib, where people from all casts and faiths gather in the name of God every morning. Mehndi is Pakistan's only well-known Indian artist to be invited by the President of Pakistan as a state visitor. Mehndi was sentenced to two years in jail in March 2018 by a Patiala court in a human trafficking lawsuit. Shamsher and the singer were charged with illegally transporting people overseas as part of their dance troupes. After registering the case and being released on bail after a few days, Daler was arrested and released on bail after a few days. Mehndi also pleaded for appeal in a higher court.

The Patiala court dismissed his appeal in 2022 and reinstated the two-year prison term.

The album established Daler as a pop star, while also winning him the Channel V's Best Indian Male Pop Artist Award. Dardi Rab Rab Rab Rab Rab, Magnasound's second album, was released a year later. Bolo Ta Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra's album has sold more copies than it did. He was nominated in three categories at Channel V Music Awards and was awarded the Channel V Best Indian Male Artist Award.

Balle Balle, his third album, came out in 1997. In six categories, he earned his Channel V Awards. Balle Balle's debut on Broadway was a hit on his previous albums. Mehndi produced and performed the hit song "Na Na Re" for the Bollywood film Mrityudata, where he appeared on the big screen with Amitabh Bachchan. In India, the film's Bollywood soundtrack album grossed 1.5 million units.

He released "Tunak Tunak Tun," a music video made on a then unprecedented budget of 25 million ($1.08 million) adjusted for inflation in 1998. The song and video were a hit in India, establishing Mehndi's status as India's top pop star at the time, with the film later becoming a global sensation. At the 1998 Screen Awards, the album received the award for Best Indian Pop Album.

Mehndi's album Ek Dana was released in 2000 by Mehndi's music label TIPS Music. The album had a mix of genres ranging from folk, rock, and pop. In the video, Priyanka Chopra, an Indian actress, appeared in Sajan Mere Satrangiya. This video was released in the year that Chopra took the Miss World title. Mehndi first signed to Universal Music in 2001 and released the single "Kala Kauwa Khayega." Mehndi's career began in 2003 and he returned to playback singing for films. For the film Maqbool, he started with the song "Ru-Ba-Ru." Daler and A.R. Rahman joined forces in the same year to release another track "Nach Le" for Lakeer – Forbidden Lines. With his next album titled Mojaan Laen Do, he fused Rock with Bhangra, and Shaa Ra Ra Ra's self-produced Shaa Ra Ra Ra in 2004.

Deadmau5 and Mehndi performed a remix of Mehndi's 1998 hit "Tunak Tun" performed by the pair in March 2014.
