Connie Inge-Lise Nielsen (born 3 July 1965) is a Danish actress whose first big role in an English language film was in The Devil's Advocate (1997).

Gladiator (2000), Mission to Mars (2000), One Hour Photo (2002), The Hunted (2003), and Nymphomaniac (2014).

Meredith Kane appeared on the Starz TV series Boss (2011–2012) and was a lead character in the second season of The Following.

She has joined the DC Extended Universe, appearing in Wonder Woman, Justice League (2017), and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020).

Early life

Nielsen was born in Frederikshavn on July 3rd, 1965, and grew up in Elling, Denmark. Bent Nielsen, a bus conductor, and her mother, Laila Inge-lise Matzigkeit (1945-2014), was an insurance clerk who also wrote musical reviews. She was confirmed a Mormon and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She began her acting career as a child with her mother on the local revue and variety stage. She travelled to Paris, France, where she performed as an actress and model, which led to further work and study in Italy—at drama school in Rome and in master classes with Lydia Styx, a professor at Piccolo Teatro di Milano. She lived in Italy for many years before moving to the United States, where she now lives.

Personal life

Nielsen dated Metallica drummer and fellow Dane Lars Ulrich from 2004 to 2012. They have one son together, Bryce Thadeus Ulrich-Nielsen (born 21 May 2007 in San Francisco, California). Sebastian Sartor (born 27 November 1989 in Rome, Italy) is her oldest son from her previous relationship with Fabio Sartor.

Nielsen is a polyglot who speaks Danish, English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, and Swedish. She also speaks Spanish.

Par où t'es rentré? On t'a pas vu sortir in 1984, there was a role in Colletti Bianchi's Italian mini-series Colletti Bianchi in 1988. She appeared in Vainze di Natale (1991) and Le Paradis Absolument (1993), both Italian films.

She migrated to the United States in the mid-1990s and appeared in Christabella Andreoli in The Devil's Advocate, starring Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves. This was the first minor breakthrough that led to appearances in the films Permanent Midnight (1998), Rushmore (1998), and Soldier (1998).

Nielsen appeared in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, opposite Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix in 2000. Since then, she has appeared in American films including Mission to Mars (2000), One Hour Photo (2002), The Hunted (2003), and Basic (2003), for which she had to shave the majority of her hair. She appeared in the French thriller Demonlover (2002), directed by Olivier Assayas. In A Shine of Rainbows (2009), she played the Irish mother to an orphan.

Nielsen made her Danish film debut in Brdre (also known as Brothers), for which she received the Danish Best Actress Award, the Bodil, and Best Actress at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. In addition, she was nominated for Best Actress at the European Film Awards. Nielsen appeared on several episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Detective Dani Beck in 2006. Mariska Hargitay, who was on maternity leave at the time of filming, was filling in for her.

Nielsen appeared in the 2014 Lars Von Trier film Nymphomaniac, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jamie Bell, and Uma Thurman. "Connie Nielsen appears slightly moist in this poster for Nymphomaniac," a campaign by The Independent said prior to the film's debut.

She appeared on the television-2 album Det gode liv in 2015, where she performed alongside Steffen Brandt on the track "Brev til Mona." With Jeremy Sisto and Missy Peregrym, she appeared as a cast member of the CBS drama FBI in September 2018.

The official title for Paramount's highly-anticipated Gladiator sequel has been officially unveiled as Gladiator II. Artwork from the sequel was spotted by CinePop at the annual Las Vegas exhibitor convention CinemaCon, where movie theater owners from around the world gather. The title was seen on a shield affixed to a number of epic statues at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, where the convention is held.

Following the new rounds of casting by well-known director Ridley Scott and his crew, the main cast for the much-anticipated Gladiator sequel is emerging. May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Peter Mensah, and Matt Lucas have all been drafted to appear in the still untitled film, which is believed to take place 30 years after Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix appeared in the original storyline. In addition, Fred Hechinger may be back on board as he and his crew are currently discussing Emperor Geta, following Barry Keoghan's decision to withdraw from the running for the unspecified position due to scheduling conflicts. The new cast members of the Irish film Lucius, which is the son of Lucilla played by Connie Nielsen in the original 2000 film. Nielson, as Jacobi, who is reprising his role as Gracchus, has been selected to be one of the few original cast members, as well as other well-known actors such as Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Joseph Quinn.
