Early life
Nielsen was born in Frederikshavn on July 3rd, 1965, and grew up in Elling, Denmark. Bent Nielsen, a bus conductor, and her mother, Laila Inge-lise Matzigkeit (1945-2014), was an insurance clerk who also wrote musical reviews. She was confirmed a Mormon and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She began her acting career as a child with her mother on the local revue and variety stage. She travelled to Paris, France, where she performed as an actress and model, which led to further work and study in Italy—at drama school in Rome and in master classes with Lydia Styx, a professor at Piccolo Teatro di Milano. She lived in Italy for many years before moving to the United States, where she now lives.
Personal life
Nielsen dated Metallica drummer and fellow Dane Lars Ulrich from 2004 to 2012. They have one son together, Bryce Thadeus Ulrich-Nielsen (born 21 May 2007 in San Francisco, California). Sebastian Sartor (born 27 November 1989 in Rome, Italy) is her oldest son from her previous relationship with Fabio Sartor.

She migrated to the United States in the mid-1990s and appeared in Christabella Andreoli in The Devil's Advocate, starring Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves. This was the first minor breakthrough that led to appearances in the films Permanent Midnight (1998), Rushmore (1998), and Soldier (1998).
Nielsen appeared in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, opposite Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix in 2000. Since then, she has appeared in American films including Mission to Mars (2000), One Hour Photo (2002), The Hunted (2003), and Basic (2003), for which she had to shave the majority of her hair.
