Clive Selsby Revill (born 18 April 1930) is a New Zealand singer, character actor, and voice artist best known for his appearances in musical theatre and on the London stage.

Early life

Revill was born in Wellington, the son of Eleanor May (née Neel) and Malet Barford Revill. He attended Rongotay College.

Career

He trained to be an accountant in New Zealand but decided against it in 1950 when he made his stage debut as Sebastian in Twelfth Night. In 1950, he came to London and studied at the Old Vic Theatre. Hamlet, Love's Labor's Lost, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, and The Tempest were among the productions in Stratford from 1956 to 1958. In Toad of Toad Hall and Jean-Paul Marat, he went on to appear in such diverse stage roles as Bob (narrator) in Irma la Douce, Ratty.

He made his Broadway debut in 1952 in The Pickwick Papers, as Sam Weller, and later appeared in Irma La Douce, The Incomparable Max and Oliver, for which his Fagin was nominated for a Tony Award. He is also well-known for his performances in Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas, both on stage and television. He appeared in the first national tour of the musical Drood, replacing George Rose, who was killed during the run.

He appeared in Tom Jones: The Musical's workshop production as well as reprised it on film.

In a number of British films of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Kaleidoscope (1966), Fathom (1967), and One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing (1975). He appeared in Otto Preminger's Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965) opposite Laurence Olivier, and his American film debut A Fine Madness (1966), as well as a rare leading role in the horror film The Legend of Hell House (1973).

He has appeared in many films as comedic foreign characters (he has played everything from Chinese to Russian). In two films for Billy Wilder, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) and Avanti, two of his finest roles of this sort appeared. Carlo Carlucci, a 1970-1972) was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his work as the put-upon hotel manager Carlo Carlucci.

Finlay Perkins, the Scottish accountant, appeared in the 1978 television miniseries Centennial. In The Mikado (the starring role) and John Wellington Wells, the title character, in Gilbert and Sullivan's 1984 film version, he appeared on the BBC.

Since relocating to the United States, he appeared in several television series, including Columbo (1978, "The Conspirators"), Hart to Hart, Dynasty, Magnum, P.I., Murder, She Wrote, Babylon 5, The Fall Guy, Maude, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the short-lived series Wizards and Warriors, he appeared as the wizard Vector.

Revill is well-known for his accent ability. He is also known for his voice in feature-length films and animated series, including Alfred Pennyworth in the first three episodes of Batman: The Animated Series (1974), as the voice of Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious in the original 1980 film, plus Conquest and Conquest: Frontier Wars.
