Keisha Castle-Hughes Career

Career

Castle-Hughes made her debut in the film Whale Rider, in which she appeared in the main role as Paikea Apirana (Pai). When the shooting started in New Zealand in late 2001, she had no previous acting experience and moved directly from her Auckland school classroom to the film set. Castle-Hughes gained acclaim for her appearance, and she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress at the 76th Academy Awards in 2004. Despite winning the Best Actress award (it went to Charlize Theron for Monster), at age 13, she became the youngest Polynesian actress to be nominated for an Academy Award, after Jocelyne LaGarde.

She nailed it by appearing in Prince's controversial "Cinnamon Girl" music video and in a shoot in Vanity Fair magazine shortly after. In 2004, Castle-Hughes was accepted to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Castle-Hughes appeared in Star Wars: The Sith Revenge. In 2006, she played the Virgin Mary in The Nativity Story. A. O. Scott, a New York Times columnist, said she was "completely unfazed by Mary's demands." She had the confidence and intelligence to play the role not as a symbol of maternity, but rather as a vivacious, thoughtful adolescent whose role was brought into question by an unimaginable responsibility." During the first week of Christmas, the Christian-themed film made only $8 million in earnings, but its box office soared during the week of Christmas.

Castle-Hughes appeared in the Australian comedy-drama film Hey, It's Esther Blueburger, which was shot in late 2006.

Castle-Hughes reunited with New Zealand director Niki Caro for the film adaptation of The Vintner's Luck, which had its international premiere in September 2009.

Castle-Hughes appeared in the Japanese horror film Vampire, and she also appeared in Axl's flatmate in The Almighty Johnsons, which premiered in 2011. In 2011, Castle-Hughes appeared in a minor role in the film Red Dog as Rosa the veterinary assistant and wife of Vanno.

Castle-Hughes appeared in The Walking Dead, an American television series in which she starred Joan.

Obara Sand, a British actress, appeared in Season 5 of HBO's Game of Thrones in 2015. She wanted to be on the show in part because she is a huge fan of the books. Castle-Hughes found out she had won the role the night the Season 4 episode "The Mountain and the Viper" premiered, in which her on-screen father's funeral was shown. She referred to the scene with a strong emotional reaction because of the characters' relationship.

Castle-Hughes has portrayed Hana Gibson, an FBI analyst, on CBS's Most Wanted, beginning in 2020.
