Christopher Owen Ayres (born May 16, 1965) is an American voice actor, ADR writer, and script writer who has worked on a variety of Japanese anime series at Seraphim Digital/Sentai Filmworks, Funimation, OkraTron 5000 and New Generation Pictures.
He got his start as an extra on Kino's Journey.
He is best known as the voice of Frieza from Dragon Ball Z Kai and Dragon Ball Super, Kei Kurono from Black Butler, Prince Soma from Black Butler, and Shingen Takeda from the Sengoku Basara series.
He is also known for Mock Combat for Cosplay panels at anime conventions.
Personal life and death
Ayres was diagnosed with end-stage chronic pulmonary disease (I) in November 2017 and needed a double lung transplant to survive. A YouCaring fundraising campaign was established to support medical care and surgical services.
Following years of respiratory disease problems, Ayres died on October 18, 2021, at the age of 56. Krystal LaPorte, his partner and fellow voice actor, announced his death on Twitter the following day.
Early life and career
When he was six years old, Ayres had his first professional acting gig in a Lollipop Soft Drinks commercial in Richmond, Virginia. When Chris was 12 years old, the Ayres family moved to Houston, Texas's Alief Middle School and then Alief Elsik High School. He graduated in 1983. Ayres, a high school graduate, attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas, where she studied theatre until 1985. He returned to Houston and continued to study Theatre at the University of Houston. He was known as a stage designer, choreographer, and combat director in the Houston, Texas Theatre community prior to his voice acting and ADR directing career.
