Christopher Atkins (born Christopher Atkins Bomann; February 21, 1961) is an American actor who rose to fame after his debut film role in the 1980 film The Blue Lagoon.
Early life
Christopher Atkins Bomann was born and raised in Rye, New York. He is the son of Donald Bomann and Bitsy Nebauer, both of whom divorced during his childhood. Atkins, a young baseball player, was inspired by knee injuries, and he began a modeling career. Atkins shortened the last name Bomann and adopted Atkins as his middle name as his last name when he began acting.
Personal life
On May 25, 1985, Atkins married Lyn Barron Weber of Sydney, Australia. They have two children: Grant Bomann (b.) and his son, Sebastian Bomann (b. ). Brittney Bomann, 1985) and her daughter Brittney Bomann (b. ). 1987 (March). They divorced in 2007.
Atkins admitted to his struggle with alcoholism in the past and said he had been sober for 22 years in a 2009 interview.
Career
Atkins auditioned for The Blue Lagoon, according to a friend of mine. Atkins, according to Randal Kleiser, the film's director, had no acting experience when he was cast. After being marooned as children, Atkins and co-star Brooke Shields played teenage cousins who discover love while living in a remote tropical paradise. The film, which was released in 1980, grossed over $58 million with a production cost of $4.5 million, but got no critical responses. In the film, Atkins appeared both nude and scantily clad. Although Blue Lagoon was a controversial film due to its nude scenes and sexual content, it became a "pop culture phenomenon" in the United States. Despite being nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Young Star of the Year in a Motion Picture – Male for The Blue Lagoon, Atkins' response was dismissive. "Atkins seems as if he would be more at home on a surfboard," a TV Guide reviewer said, and Gary Arnold said in The Washington Post that Atkins' appearance "evoke[s] modeling sessions and beach-party movies."
Atkins performed nude for Playgirl in 1982 and co-starred Kristy McNichol in The Pirate Movie (1982), an update to Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Pirates of Penzance. In that film, his song "How Can I Live Without Her," which peaked at #71 on the Billboard Hot 100, was used. Atkins received the 1983 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actors for his appearance in the film A Night in Heaven (1983). Atkins played camp counselor Peter Richards on Dallas for one season (1983-1984).
