Christopher Atkins Career

Career

Atkins auditioned for The Blue Lagoon, according to a friend of mine. Atkins, according to Randal Kleiser, the film's director, had no acting experience when he was cast. After being marooned as children, Atkins and co-star Brooke Shields played teenage cousins who discover love while living in a remote tropical paradise. The film, which was released in 1980, grossed over $58 million with a production cost of $4.5 million, but got no critical responses. In the film, Atkins appeared both nude and scantily clad. Although Blue Lagoon was a controversial film due to its nude scenes and sexual content, it became a "pop culture phenomenon" in the United States. Despite being nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Young Star of the Year in a Motion Picture – Male for The Blue Lagoon, Atkins' response was dismissive. "Atkins seems as if he would be more at home on a surfboard," a TV Guide reviewer said, and Gary Arnold said in The Washington Post that Atkins' appearance "evoke[s] modeling sessions and beach-party movies."

Atkins performed nude for Playgirl in 1982 and co-starred Kristy McNichol in The Pirate Movie (1982), an update to Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Pirates of Penzance. In that film, his song "How Can I Live Without Her," which peaked at #71 on the Billboard Hot 100, was used. Atkins received the 1983 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actors for his appearance in the film A Night in Heaven (1983). Atkins played camp counselor Peter Richards on Dallas for one season (1983-1984).

Atkins appeared on Suddenly Susan, a television sitcom that starred Shields, in 1999. Atkins appeared on VH1's Confessions of a Teen Idol, a reality show starring former teen idols. Atkins was ranked No. 1 in the world's top tennies. On VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Teen Stars, 76.

Atkins co-developed the Christopher Atkins Strike Jacket E.F.L., making him a luxury pool builder and co-developer. "A rubbery slipcovering for traditional baits," Extreme Fishing Lure says.
