Christian Jacob Life

Christian Jacob is a jazz pianist.

With singer Tierney Sutton, he has gained a following as co-leader, arranger, and pianist, though he has also worked as a solo artist and president.

Early years

On May 8, 1958, Jacob was born in Metz, Lorraine. He was immersed in studying the French classics by age four. Jacob was a natural performer with a flawless pitch and natural talent, as opposed to a child prodigy. He didn't discover jazz until age 10, but when it did, its improvised appearance attracted him right away. Dave Brubeck and Oscar Peterson were among Dave Brubeck and Oscar Peterson's early influences. Jacob studied at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris as a child. He will teach piano at the Conservatoire National de Région in Metz later this year.

Jacob earned many awards as a student, including the Joe Zawinul Jazz Masters Award, Oscar Peterson Jazz Masters Award, and "Best Collegiate Jazz Soloist" before graduating magna cum laude in 1985. Jacob took up teaching at Berklee University.

He founded "Bostonian Friends," a musical partnership with Swiss saxophonist Fritz Renold's that made jazz recordings ("Starlight") and classical commissions ("The 6 Cycles") with the Thai Symphony Orchestra 1999, and "Helvetic Suite" 1998). Despite having renounced the classical performing circuit for jazz, Jacob has maintained links with the classical world through commissions like this. Jacob was a member of the Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra, for which he served as both an arranger and instructor throughout the 1990s. Jacob served as Director in Residence of the "Orchestre Regional Jazz de Lorraine" in Nancy, Meurthe-Moselle, from 1992 to 1994, and received their first commission.

Christian Jacob Career

Career

While still at Berklee, Jacob collaborated with vibraphonist Gary Burton but left Boston to tour with Maynard Ferguson in 1992. Jacob performed as author, writer, and arranger with Ferguson's band. Ferguson released John Patitucci and Peter Erskine's first piano trio album, which featured Jacob's first piano trio album. Steve Swallow and Adam Nussbaum, both the sidemen for his follow-up trio project "Time Lines." Miroslav Vitou and Bill Stewart appeared in Jacob's third trio. On Concord Records, the first two albums were released, but the one following is yet to be announced.

Jacob has a long history as a sideman, including Phil Woods, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Terje Gewelt, Carl Saunders, and others.

Jacob was hired to perform on one recording with Tierney, but the group bonded musically and gave up their leader/sidemen status. The Tierney Sutton Band's founders, Trey Henry, Ray Brinker, Kevin Axt, and Jacob joined The Tierney Sutton Band. They released eight CDs as co-leaders. Unsung Heroes, Blue in Green, Something Cool, Dancing in the Shadow, I'm with the Band, Desire and American Road, On the Other Hand. The latter four were all nominated for a Grammy Award. Christian and The Tierney Sutton Band received two Grammy nominations for American Road, Best Jazz Vocal Album, and Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocalist.

On his own independent label WilderJazz, Jacob released three trio albums. Styne & Mine, a 2004 album, is a tribute to Jule Styne's musical journey, and it debuted at No. 1 on the charts. 3 on the jazz radio charts. Contradictions were first recorded in 2006. The album honors pianist Michel Petrucciani's original compositions while still providing a new glimpse at his later compositions. Live in Japan, Jacob's next trio album was a joint venture with Japanese label SSJ. In 2008, it was recorded live at Tokyo Tuc Jazz Club.

In 2011, Jacob became the music director for Broadway musician Betty Buckley. A week of sold-out performances at Feinstein's nightclub in New York brought her her world of Broadway. It was a good match on musical terms. He was excited to return to classical music in a certain way. They took the show inside the recording studio at the end of 2011.

Ah, Men!

Palmetto Records will publish the Boys of Broadway in August 2012.

His writing credits include writing for Randy Brecker, Franco Ambrosetti, Benny Golson, Gary Burton, Tommy Smith, Tommy Smith, The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Jazzaar (The Swiss Youth Jazz Orchestra) and his own big band "Big Band Theory."
