Angela Hewitt Career

Career

Hewitt was born in Ottawa, Ontario, daughter of the Yorkshire-born Godfrey Hewitt (thus she also has British nationality) who was choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa. She and her mother began piano lessons at the age of three. At the age of five, she was granted a scholarship. She trained violin with Walter Prystawski, a recorder for Wolfgang Grunsky, and ballet with Nesta Toumine in Ottawa. She appeared in The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she studied with Earle Moss and Myrtle Guerrero from 1964 to 1973. She then went on to be the tutor of French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa.

Hewitt has appeared around the world in recital and as soloist with orchestra. She is best known for her Bach cycle, which began in 1994 and ended in 2005, and she covers all of J. S. Bach's main keyboard works. On October 17, 2014, Bach's The Art of Fugue was released. Louis Couperin's discography also includes works by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Olivier Messiaen, Emmanuel Chabrier, Maurice Ravel, Robert Schumann, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, Gabriel Debussy, and Gabriel Fauré. She has released two discs of Mozart concertos with the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, as well as a third with Ottawa's National Arts Centre Orchestra conducted by Hannu Lintu. She performed the Schumann Piano Concerto with the DSO Berlin and Lintu.

In major cities around the world, Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier was entirely dedicated to complete performances throughout the 2007–08 season. Bach's Hyperion DVD on the piano was released to coincide with the tour.

Hewitt founded the Trasimeno Music Festival in Umbria near Perugia, where she is the cultural director.

In 2002, Hewitt switched to Fazioli pianos. Paolo Fazioli, the company's founder, was forced to abandon her unique four-pedal F278 Fazioli by instrument movers in January 2020 and deemed unsalvageable by him. In January 2021, she selected a new Fazioli (out of five made available to her from which to choose) and ordered her new Fazioli.
