Piers Lane (born 8 January 1958) is an Australian classical pianist.

His career has taken him to more than 40 countries.

Early life

When auditioning as piano students for the Royal College of Music, Lane's English father and Australian mother met. Lane was born in London and he grew up in Brisbane. He received a Medal of Excellence from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, where his mentor, Nancy Weir, won the Margaret Nickson Prize in 1978 and the Ruby C Cooling award in 1978 and 1978. The conservatorium later conferred an honorary doctorate.

He first came to prominence at the inaugural Sydney International Piano Competition in 1977, at which he was named Best Australian Pianist (he served as a judge in the 2004 competition). He later studied in France as part of a Churchill Fellowship.

Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center in New York under Leon Botstein, received the Avery Fisher Hall, Museum of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Hallé, and Ulster Orchestras; Beethoven's Emperor Concerto with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; a three-recital series called Metamorphoses; and appearances in numerous major piano festivals in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Scandinavia; and an all-Chopin recital with the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Scandinavian Among other things, he has performed with all ABC and BBC Orchestras, the City of Birmingham, Bournemouth, Gothenburg, and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras, the Aarhus, Philharmonia, Kanazawa Ensemble, and City of London Sinfonia, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Orchestre National de France. At the BBC Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall, he has performed solo five times.

During 2008, Cheryl Barker and her partner baritone Peter Coleman-Wright for Musica Viva Australia, concerto performances in Christchurch and Dunedin, Noosa, and Perth were among the Australian and New Zealand engagements.

Brett Dean, violist/composer Brett Dean, and Anne Sofie von Otter and Bengt Forsberg's performances in Malmö, Stockholm, and the Bergen International Festival were among the latest chamber performances. He continues his long-term friendship with British violinist Tasmin Little in UK recital tours. Piers Lane is Patron of the Accompanist Guild of Queensland, Inc.

Lane has been the Artistic Director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, which takes place annually in Townsville.

Lane has a lengthy discography on the Hyperion label, as well as recordings for EMI, Decca, BMG, Lyrita, and Unicorn-Khanchana. Eyvind Aln's and Christian Sinding's concertos, a Delius song album with Yvonne Kenny, and a collection of Ernest Bloch's Piano Quintets with the Goldner String Quartet, one of the Month's Best of the Month in December 2007 and BBC Music Magazine's Record of the Month. He is one of the few pianists to have recorded John Ireland's Piano Concerto in E-flat major. Hyperion released his collection of Malcolm Williamson's complete piano concertos, as well as the world premiere recording of the 4th Piano Concerto in 2014. Lane is a well-known voice on BBC Radio 3, having written and presented more than 100 programs, including a 54-part series The Piano.

He was named an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music in 1994, where he has been a piano professor since 1989. He received an honorary doctorate from Griffith University, Brisbane, in 2007. Lane is a patron and a vocal promoter of the Tait Memorial Trust in London, a non-profit charity that helps young Australian performing artists in the United Kingdom.

Lane is the Artistic Director of the Myra Hess Day exhibition held at the National Gallery in London annually and the 2009 Bloch Festival at Wigmore Hall. Ernest Bloch Piano Quintets Nose by Lane's recording of Ernest Bloch Piano Quintets Nos. In 2009, the Goldner Quartet (Hyperion) was nominated for BBC Music Magazine Awards.

Lane was named Officer of the Order of Australia on June 11, 2012, for his "distinguished contribution to the performing arts as an internationally respected classical pianist, to academic and cultural organizations, and to the development of emerging musicians."
