Cherie Mary Lunghi (born 4 April 1952) is an English film, television, and theatre actress best known for her appearances in a number of British television dramas.

Guinevere, a 1981 film Excalibur, is her international fame.

Gabriella Benson, the 1990s television series The Managerss, as well as a series of Kenco coffee advertisements, are among her long line of film, stage, and television credits.

She appeared in the Strictly Come Dancing series in 2008.

Nathalie Lunghi's mother is the actress.

Early life

Lunghi was born in Nottingham. Alessandro Lunghi, her father, was Italian.

She was raised by her mother, aunt, and grandmother, but her father was only seen occasionally. Lunghi has described herself as "different" because she did not have a mother and father like other children. Lunghi attended Richmond Grammar School in North Yorkshire but has said she was not academic and much more interested in make believe.

Personal life

After meeting while studying at London's Central School of Speech and Drama, Lunghi briefly married South African student Ralph Lawson. The 1975 marriage was a point of convenience, so Lawson could continue in the United Kingdom. The husband and wife never lived together as husband and wife, instead living in separate homes in Newcastle. Lawson returned to South Africa two years ago to start a new role. Nathalie Lunghi (b. ) has a daughter. Roland Joffé, a director from 1986, produced a film version.

Lunghi, a London-based arts education scholar, appeared in The Wild Duck and Alice in Alice, a BBC radio show while still attending school. She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in the late 1970s after graduating from Homerton College, Cambridge, and London's Central School of Speech and Drama, playing leading roles such as Perpeta, Celia, and Viola. She appeared in the 1979 British short film Diversion (the precursor for the 1987 US film Fatal Attraction). In 1981, she landed the role of Guinevere in the film Excalibur.

She appeared in the 1982 television series Praying Mantis, based on Hubert Monteilhet's book (Les Mantes Religieuses). Pinkas Braun, Carmen du Sautoy, and Jonathan Pryce appeared in the drama. Lunghi appeared in King David with Edward Woodward and Richard Gere in 1985. She appeared alongside Robert De Niro in The Mission. "It was amazing working with him," Lunghi told author Paul Stenning, "it was amazing." He transforms right in front of you. You'll be aware when watching him on television that he has changed – he is not Robert De Niro – he is someone else. I don't think you can learn how to do it; it's just the strength of your imagination."

She migrated to Los Angeles for eight years in the mid-1980s but returned to England to care for her mother. After performing a Cha-Cha, she was disqualified from the competition on November 16th, 2008 (week nine). She was voted out of the competition by three votes to one in the dance-off against model Lisa Snowdon. She performed an American Smooth and a rumba with James Jordan in the Strictly Tour in January/February 2009.
