Early life and education

Chen was born on August 27, 1983. Chen was involved in the Taiwanese variety show Red Versus White due to his similarity to Takeshi Kaneshiro in high school. He attended Jinwen University of Science and Technology.

Career

Chen first gained notoriety with his debut film Blue Gate Crossing, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and received rave reviews. His support for Hong Kong films, including The Twins Effect II, A Chinese Tall Story, and Kung Fu Dunk, all pushed his fame to countries outside of Taiwan.

Chen came to prominence in 2011. For his role in the independent drama film Buddha Mountain, he was nominated for the Best Actor award at the Deauville Asian Film Festival. He received the Golden Bell Award for Best Actor in the hit film In Time with You the same year. Chen appeared in All Pass, a Taiwanese game show (based on FOX's game show Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader) on January 6, 2012. Chen answered the question during the taping, "Name the person who said the word:" There are three ups, on a pillow, a saddle, and the toilet; only one to win the NT$100,000 (roughly $3,000) grand prize; Chen answered the question: "Name the person who said the word:" The person who said the word is the person who said the word is "yes." "He gave the correct answer, but Ouyang Xiu replied." Though being unsure of what to say when host Chang Hsiao-yen grilled Chen on how he knew the answer, he remembered reading one of Xiu's books.

Chen was named "Outstanding Performance" at the 2013 Chinese Film Media Awards for the romance film Snowfall in Taipei. He appeared in Han Han Han Han's road trip comedy The Continent in the following year.

Chen joined BM+ Entertainment in 2015 for his first foray into the Korean entertainment industry. He appeared in 20 Once More, the Chinese version of the hit Korean film Miss Granny's hit Korean film Miss Granny's hit Korean film Miss Granny's hit Korean film Miss Granny, in the same year. The film earned 32,350,000 USD and tied for the most foreign-Chinese co-produced films at the box office.

Chen later appeared in two Chinese-Korean co-productions - black comedy film Bad Guys Always Die opposite Son Ye-jin - and romantic comedy film Life Risking Romance with Ha Ji-won.

Chen partnered with Song Ji-hyo in the Chinese version of We Got Married, a virtual reality show that couples as a couple. He appeared in the cast of Korean drama Monster the previous year.

Chen appeared in The Dreaming Man, a Disney-produced romantic comedy film.
