Richard Anthony "Cheech" Marn (born July 13, 1946) is an American stand-up comedian, singer, writer, and activist who gained fame as a member of Cheech & Chong's 1970s and early 1980s as Don Johnson's partner Insp.

Early life
Marin was born in South Los Angeles, California, to Mexican-American parents Elsa (née Meza) (1923-2010), a secretary, and Oscar Marin (1922-2015), a Los Angeles police officer, and Oscar Marin (1922-2015). Marin was born with a cleft lip that was surgically repaired. According to Marin, he identifies himself as Chicano; he speaks some Spanish and often uses it in his films, but he is not fluent.
The Marin's nickname "cheech" is short for "chicharron," fried pork rind, which is a common snack and ingredient in Latin American cuisine. Marin attributed the nickname to his uncle, "I came home from the hospital, I was like a few days old or something," he said in a 2017 NPR interview, "Ay, parece un chicharrón." You know, it seems that this little chicharrón is a little chicharrón."
Marin graduated from Bishop Alemany High School and then studied English at San Fernando Valley State College (now California State University, Northridge), where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa and graduated in 1968. Marin then attempted to perform for Frank Zappa in 1967, but in September, the troupe migrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War. Tommy Chong, Marin's future comedic partner, was born in Calgary, Alberta.
Personal life
Marin was married to Darlene Morley, who co-produced Cheech & Chong's The Corsican Brothers and later appeared in minor roles in earlier Cheech & Chong films under the name Rikki Marin. In 1984, the couple had one child and divorced. Patti Heid, a California married artist, was born in 1986 and has since divorced. In a sunset wedding at their house, Marin married Russian pianist Natasha Rubin.

Career
Marin, who was a member of the immensely popular comedy pair Cheech & Chong, appeared in a number of comedies in the 1970s and 1980s. When co-writing and starring in all seven films with Marin, Tommy Chong produced four of their films.
Marin starred in a number of films as a solo actor, most notably Born in East L.A., which was also his directorial debut, Tin Cup, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico, although Cheech & Chong disbanded in 1985. In Ghostbusters II, he appeared as a dockworker. In the film adaptation of John Grisham's holiday book "Skipping Christmas," starring Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis, he made his second appearance as a policeman in 2004 as "Officer Salino." Marin appeared on Fox's Married... with Children as the voice of Bundy's Briard dog, Buck; he was portrayed in three episodes: What's Barking, Change for a Buck, and Batteries.
Marin made the switch to full-time television work when he co-starred on the short-lived The Golden Girls spin-off (1992–1993) and later with Don Johnson, Jaime P. Gomez, and Yasmine Bleeth in the crime series Nash Bridges (1996–2001), in which they appeared on San Francisco police detectives. He has been involved in filmmaking and performing voice overs for animated films in recent years. Marin appeared in Judging Amy, playing an independently wealthy landscape designer, and Rob Schneider appeared in the CBS sitcom Rob.
Marin has been a frequent collaborator of filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who has worked with Marin seven times; the Spy Kids trilogy's last two iterations, From Dusk to Dawn and Machete. He appeared in many Disney animated films, including Tito the Chihua (1988), Banzai the hyena in The Lion King (1994), and Ramone in Cars (2006) and Cars 3 (2017). He appeared in The Cisco Kid (1994) and reprised Banzai in the video game Kingdom Hearts II.
