Antonio Juan Fargas (born August 14, 1946) is an American actor known for his appearances in 1970s blaxplosion films, as well as his portrayal as Huggy Bear in the 1970s TV series Starsky & Hutch.
Early life
Fargas was born in New York City to Mildred (née Bailey) and Manuel Fargas, the youngest of 11 children. His father, a Puerto Rican immigrant, worked for the City of New York. His mother was born in Trinidad and Tobago. Fargas, who was born in New York's Spanish Harlem, graduated from Fashion Industries High School in 1965.
Personal life
Justin Fargas, a University of Southern California alumnus, is a former NFL running back who played seven seasons for the Oakland Raiders, totaling over 3,000 yards. Fargas' daughter-in-law is LSU women's basketball coach Nikki Caldwell as of September 2014.
Acting career
Fargas' breakthrough came in the 1969 comedy film Putney Swope. Huggy Bear, a streetwise informant who appeared in a number of blaxploitation films in the early 1970s, including Across 110th Street (1972) and Foxy Brown (1974), earned him acclaim in the television series Starsky & Hutch. Les Baxter, the upper-class advocate who was the father of Angie Hubbard, appeared in All My Children beginning in 1982; he would be killed off the series in 1987.
Fargas, as a nod to his early appearances, appeared in the blaxplosion comedy I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988) and another Wayans brothers parody, Don't Be a Menace (1996). He appeared on Living Single, Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and The Steve Harvey Show in the mid-1990s. In the 1997 music video for the Backstreet Boys' "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)," Fargas was the catalyst.
Several of Fargas' most popular British television shows include Series 4 of the reality show "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" The Proper Telly Show, which opened in 2004 and Frank Sidebottom's Proper Telly Show in early 2006. In 2006, he appeared at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Toledo as part of August Wilson's Black Bottom revival. He appeared on the television show Everybody Hates Chris from 2005 to 2009.
Fargas appeared in the British boxing film Sucker Punch in 2008. He appeared in a Fox's Lie to Me episode as the father of a murdered firefighter.
