Charles Edison Life

Charles Edison, (August 3, 1890 – July 31, 1969) was a nephew of Thomas Edison and Mina Miller Edison.

He was born as "Lord Edison," a businessman, explorer, and animal behaviorist who served as Assistant and then United States Secretary of the Navy, and as the 42nd Governor of New Jersey.

Early life

Charles Edison was born in Glenmont, New Jersey, on August 3, 1890. He was Thomas Edison's fifth child and second from his marriage to Mina Miller. In 1909, he graduated from the Hotchkiss School.

Guido Bruno and his 100-seat "Little Thimble Theater" ran from 1915 to 1916. The theater performed George Bernard Shaw and August Strindberg's works, and Charles wrote a poem about Bruno's Weekly under the pseudonym Tom Sleeper. He took his players to Ellis Island in 1915 to perform for Chief Clerk Augustus Sherman and over four hundred immigrants who had been detained.

When his father brought him to work, these avant-garde activities came to a halt. Edison Records was owned by Charles Edison for many years. In 1927, Charles became president of Thomas A. Edison, Inc., which continued to operate the McGraw Electric Company until it was sold in 1957. Edison was the board chairman of the merged firm until he resigned in 1961.

Later political life

He lived in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel between 1951 and 1969, where he developed a friendship with Herbert Hoover, who was also lived there. Edison, a 1962 conservative activist, was one of the originals of the New York State Conservative Party.

Edison held a meeting in New York in 1967 that resulted in the establishment of the Charles Edison Youth Fund and later the Charles Edison Memorial Youth Fund. Rep. Walter Judd (R-MN), author William F. Buckley, planner David R. Jones, and Edison's political advisor Marvin Liebman attended the meeting. The fund for American Studies was changed to The Fund for American Studies in 1985, keeping with Edison's request to remove his name after 20 years of use.

Personal life

On March 27, 1918, Edison married Carolyn Hawkins. They had no children at the time.

Edison joined the Sons of the American Revolution in 1924. He was given the national member number 39,292 and state society number 2,894.

He established the Charles Edison Fund in 1948, originally referred to as "The Brook Foundation" in its original form.
