Cedric Antonio Kyles (born April 24, 1964), better known by his stage name Cedric the Entertainer, is an American actor, stand-up comedian, and game show host.

During the 1993-94 season and the 1995 Def Comedy Jam, he appeared on BET's ComicView and Def Comedy Jam.

He is best known for co-starring Steve Harvey on The Steve Harvey Show as one of The Original Kings of Comedy (WB) and portraying Eddie Walker in Barbershop.

He can also be seen on CBS' "The Neighborhood" as a character.

In 2013,-14, he starred in the TV Land original series The Soul Man, which aired from 2012 to 2016.

He has also worked on Ice Age, the Madagascar film series, Charlotte's Web, and the Planes franchise.

He was named on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019.

Early life

Cedric was born in Caruthersville, Missouri, the son of Rosetta (née Boyce), a schoolteacher), and Kittrell Kyles, a Missouri Pacific Railroad employee. Sharita Kyles Wilson, a communications professor at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, has a younger brother, Sharita Kyles Wilson, is his cousin.

Cedric was born in Caruthersville, Missouri, but after junior high school, he moved to Berkeley, Missouri, a northern suburb of St. Louis. He is a graduate of Berkeley High School.

He earned a degree in communications from Southeast Missouri State University.

Personal life

Cedric is married to Lorna Wells. Croix (born 2000) and Lucky Rose (born 2003), two children. Tiara (born 1990), his sister, also from a previous marriage, has a baby. Through the Cedric the Entertainer Charitable Foundation, he maintains his involvement in his high school by awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior each year. Cedric studied mass communication at Southeast Missouri State University and spent time as a state farm insurance adjuster and substitute high school instructor before becoming a full-time comedian. He is a Kappa Alpha Psi member. Lincoln University of Missouri awarded him an honorary doctorate in fine arts and humanities in May 2015 (his parents' alma mater). In 2018, St. Louis honored him by renaming the street in front of the Kappa Alpha Psi Alumni House, Cedric The Entertainer Way.

Career

Cedric began acting in 1995, auditioning for and landing his first-ever role as The Cowardly Lion in the 1995 Apollo Theater Revival of The Wiz. On The Steve Harvey Show, he boosted his career by playing Cedric Jackie Robinson, Steve Harvey's cousin on The Steve Harvey Show. He went back to film, including Barbershop 2: Back to Business, Ride, Serving Sara, Johnson Family Vacation, Intolerable Cruelty, Man of the House, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Be Cool. When his Barbershop character made unpopular remarks about Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, he was the subject of controversies. These remarks were made in character; he never regretted for them. In Madagascar, he addressed Maurice the aye aye. He became a part owner of the Champ Car auto racing series in October 2005. He appeared in the film Golly the gander as the voice of Golly the gander.

Although his acting career grew, Cedric continued to perform stand-up and traveled the country as one of the top comedy headliners with Steve Harvey, D. Hughley, and Bernie Mac. The act was later turned into a Spike Lee film, The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric the Entertainer Presents, Cedric the Entertainer Presents, had been revived by Fox for a second season, but it was cancelled by Fox before the season began. Grown-A$$ Man was a writer who took time to write a book. He appeared in the 2003 video game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004. Cedric The Entertainer: Taking You Higher is his most recent HBO Comedy Special. (Kamilah Barrett and Sandra Colton, two of the background dancers from the competition, were finalists in Fox's So You Think You Can Dance). He also appeared on two multi-platinum selling albums, Nelly's Country Grammar (2000) and Jay-Z's The Black Album (2003).

Cedric plays Jake, a janitor with amnesia who may be a clandestine undercover government agent involved in a criminal arms bribery. He appeared in the 2008 films Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins and Street Kings.

Cedric performed as the lead comedian at the White House Correspondents Dinner, but he remarked that he was unprepared because he expected to follow President George W. Bush's amusing address. He instead followed First Lady Laura Bush, who described him as "hilarious" and "probably the funniest person" she had ever encountered.

Cedric has received many accolades, beginning with $500 in the Johnny Walker National Comedy Contest in 1990 and finishing first in the Miller Genuine Draft Comedy Contest in 1993. Richard Pryor Comic of the Year was selected by BET in Richard Pryor's Yearbook. He has also received four NAACP awards.

On June 7, 2008, he was inducted to the St. Louis Walk of Fame. His star is at 6166 Delmar.

In Little Rock, Arkansas, he was the special guest host for WWE Raw on September 21, 2009. During the show, he competed in a wrestling match, defeating Chavo Guerrero Jr. by pinfall. Santino Marella was also present as a guest referee during the match. Cedric also received assistance from an unknown wrestler named The Sledge Hammer (played by Imani Lee) and Hornswoggle.

Cedric's debut with Dance Fu was in March 2010, he was founded and funded solely by his company Bird and a Bear Entertainment with producer Eric C. Rhone. Kel Mitchell, a comedian, appeared in it. Cedric made his comedic appearance in the film as a homicide detective. On October 4, 2011, it was released in a straight DVD.

Cedric appeared in David Mamet's revival of American Buffalo on Broadway.

Cedric said in a June 21, 2011, interview, that his new reality game show, It's Worth What?, will air on NBC on July 12, 2011, but that date has been postponed by a week to July 19. He appeared as the main character in the TV Land original series The Soul Man, starring Niecy Nash, starting in 2012. The series ran for five seasons and ended in 2016.

Cedric was the host of the classic American television show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which premiered on September 2, 2013. "With his deep roots as a legendary stand-up comedian and actor, Cedric will bring his fresh approach and bouncing fun to the program," Disney-ABC Domestic Television president Janice Marinelli said. Cedric announced on April 30, 2014 that he was canceled Who Wants to Be a Millionaire after the 2013–14 season to concentrate on his busy schedule. Terry Crews took over as host on September 8, 2014.
