Caterina Valente (born 14 January 1931 in Paris, France) is a French-Italian multilingual singer, guitarist, dancer, and actress.

Valente is a polyglot; she speaks six languages and sings in eleven.

Valente is best known as a world performer, but she also spent part of her career in the United States, where she performed with Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Perry Como, and Ella Fitzgerald, among others.

Personal life

Valente, an ethnic Italian, was born and raised in France and is a French citizen. Maria, one of four children, was born into a musical family; her father, Giuseppe, was an accordion player; and her mother, Maria, a musical comedienne.

Valente married German juggler Erik van Aro in 1952. The couple divorced later this year. Eric van Aro, the son of singer Eric van Aro, is their son.

Valente married British pianist Roy Budd in 1972. They had a son before divorcing in 1980.

Valente, a polyglot, speaks six languages (French, Italian, German, English, Spanish, Spanish, and Swedish) and can sing in any of them. In addition, she is also a natural performer in Dutch, Portuguese, Hebrew, Greek, and Japanese.

Valente is a long-time resident of Lugano, Switzerland.

She appeared on The Colgate Comedy Hour with Gordon MacRae in 1955. Hier bin ich (Here I Am, Here I Stay) was a musical comedy directed by Bill Haley & His Comets in 1958. Valente sang a duet with Haley on a newly recorded version of his song "Vive la Rock and Roll" during Haley's segment.

Valente worked with Claus Ogerman and collected information in both Italian and English that he arranged/conducted and/or composed on the Decca labels in the mid-1960s. And London Valente was a favorite of singer Perry Como, appearing on eight occasions on his NBC Kraft Music Hall television show from 1961 to 1966. She appeared on The Entertainers, a CBS variety show, from 1964 to 1965. She was co-host (with Carol Burnett and later Bob Newhart). She appeared on The Dean Martin Exhibition often.

She was a major Schlager performer in Germany. Cole Porter's I Love Paris debuted under the German name Ganz Paris träumt von der Liebe, which sold more than 900,000 copies in 1954.

Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Perry Como, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Claus Ogerman, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Sy Oliver, Buddy Rich, and Edmundo Ros have all performed or appeared with many international celebrities, including Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Perry Como, Elliott Fitzgerald, Bennett Bennett, Woody Herman, Robert Ogerman, Claus Ogerman, Sophie Bennett, Edmundo Ros.

The Italian jazz CD was released in 1989 and re-released in later years under the name Fantastica and Platinum deluxe, her best-selling CD worldwide. In 2001, she released Girltalk, a new collection by harpist Catherine Michel. In 2003, she retired from active teaching.

In 2019, her song "Bongo cha cha" was included in the soundtrack to Spider-Man: Far From Home, directed by Jon Watts, became popular and gained new fame.

The song went viral on social media platform TikTok in 2021, thanks to its usage in Latin countries and South America, and then became well-known in Italy and Germany.
