Cat Bauer Life

Catherine "Cat" Bauer (born July 27, 1955 in Greenville, South Carolina), is the award-winning author of contemporary books starring Harley Columba as the young protagonist, and is known for her unique and honest voice.

"Bauer creates a witty and tenacious narrator in...Harley Columba," Publishers Weekly noted. "This sympathetic heroine will have readers rooting for this sympathetic heroine." The authors wrote in a Thomson Gale biography that "readers and writers often found Bauer's book in the authentic voice of its heroine, Harley."

"Harley's voice is true to the experience of many young people,' and "though the findings are not surprising, they do not follow any formulas," Patricia Morrow wrote in Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA).

Life

Bauer is the oldest of five children in the country. She was born on an Air Force Base in Greenville, South Carolina, where her father was stationed. During a thunderstorm, she was struck by ball lightning while asleep in her bassinet during a storm, according to a family's lore. She spent the first five years of her life in Kearney, New Jersey, with her paternal grandparents and her summers on Bodin Lake [2] in Upstate New York. Her grandfather, who was also an engineer, was the foreman of Kearfott.

She and her grandparents migrated to Montape Lakes, North Carolina, where Bauer's fictionalization of the town as "Lenape Lakes" is "only forty-five minutes away" -- "just forty-five minutes outside of New York City, although it may as well be four zillion light-years away since no one from here ever goes there." Bauer learned to read and use the slide rule before going to kindergarten and began writing books at the age of six. She demonstrated musical ability at a young age, played the clarinet, piano, violin, and guitar, and was also active in the theater.

Bauer received an honor from Pompton Lakes High School in 1973.

She moved to New York City and studied with Stella Adler and the National Shakespeare Conservatory after a brief marriage to her high school sweetheart.

Cat Bauer Career

Acting career

She moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue an acting career, and was active in the LA theater scene as both an actress and a playwright, co-authoring, and performing in the cult hit, "Peacocks." She was a close friend and mentor of late Don Richardson [3], whose former students included Grace Kelly and Anne Bancroft. Bauer helped Mr. Richardson with his book "Acting Without Agony," and she revealed that she and her future husband, television director James Quinn, were in his workshop when they first appeared on Law & Order in one-hour episodes. Bauer lived in Los Feliz' hills during this period.

Writing career

Sassy's first short story, Run Away, was published in July, 1993, and was the inspiration for her first book, Harley, Like a Person. That effort was the recipient of the first Sue Alexander Most Promising New Work Award from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, which was titled "Zee." The SCBWI Annual Conference in Los Angeles has selected manuscripts from manuscripts submitted for individual review. The award is given to the manuscript that appears to be the most promising for publication. Walter Dean Myers, the first-ever Michael L. Printz Award winner, praised Bauer's winning entry as one of "firsts," a prestigious award that honors excellence in young adult literature.

Like a Person, Bauer's first book, which was originally published in 2000 by Winslow Press, a boutique publisher that filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2002, later changed the name of her first book to Harley.

Bauer was heavily influenced by John Lennon's life and work, and her books were full of references to the former Beatle. For example, Harley Columba was born on the 80th anniversary of John Lennon's death on December 8, and his parents attended a memorial service in his honor.

Holly Bolstad of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, won her state Level I Letters About Literature competition, a national reading-writing competition sponsored by the Library of Congress, by assisting Cat Bauer in writing about Harley, Like a Person, affecting her life. To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre—fiction or nonfiction, modern or classic—describing how the author's work changed the student's way of thinking about the world or themselves.

Bauer moved to Venice, Italy, where she lives today on the Grand Canal. She is now divorced.

Bauer was also a regular contributor to the International Herald Tribune's Italian supplement, Italy Daily, and a writer who wrote about Venice's art, culture, and architecture. In the Financial Times Arts & Weekend Magazine, Venetian Cat - Venice Blog's most popular blog has been highlighted.

Hondence Carter Beatty, a lawyer from York, signed an Order reverting all rights to Harley. Like a person to Bauer, on May 27, 2004. In 2007, Alfred A. Knopf, a Random House, Inc., New York division, and Harley's Ninth, a book that takes place on the same date as well as a companion book titled, Harley's Ninth, were published in a marginalized version. The book was released in a slightly different way. John Lennon's birthday.
