Carlos Gallardo Career

Life and career

Gallardo was born in Ciudad Acua, Mexico, to a Mexican father and an Irish mother.

Gallardo's first exposure came with the release of El Mariachi, a critically acclaimed film known for costing US$7,000 to make. The film was nominated for Best First Feature at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival, and Gallardo received the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature, an award he shared with Rodriguez. He was also recognized as unit production manager and for El Mariachi's special effects.

Gallardo, El Mariachi's son, went on to be co-producer of Robert Rodriguez's Mexico Trilogy sequels, Desperado and Once Upon a Time. Both films featured Antonio Banderas in the role of El Mariachi, in lieu of Gallardo, although Gallardo appeared in Desperado for a brief period, but Gallardo was only briefly involved in Campa, El Mariachi's neighbor.

Gallardo co-wrote, produced, and starred in Bandido, the 2004 independent action drama. He was also a director of Me amaras bajo la lluvia, a Colombian television series.

Carlos appeared in the Robert Rodriguez film Curandero, in which he plays the lead. Eduardo Rodriguez penned Curandero.

He appeared opposite Michael Biehn and Tom Savini in 2005 as Deputy Carlos in Planet Terror, Robert Rodriguez's portion of Grindhouse. It was his first appearance in a Rodriguez film since Desperado.
