Pickard had only won 16 games with the Thunderbirds in his second season, and was named to the 2010 WHL West First All-Star Team, despite his only winning streak in 62 games. Pickard was the third goaltender chosen in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, finishing in second place, 49th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche, despite being ranked as the best North American goaltender by central scouting. Pickard was invited to participate in Canada's National Junior Team selection camp for the 2011 World Junior Championships from 2010 to 2011. He was not selected for the final roster.
Pickard signed a three-year entry level deal with the Colorado Avalanche on March 25, 2011. The Lake Erie Monsters, their American Hockey League affiliate team, spent the remainder of the season. Pickard was drafted to the Seattle Thunderbirds at the start of the 2011-12 season, where he spent his junior years. Pickard played in 47 games for Lake Erie, earning 20 wins in his first full season as a professional.
Pickard started the year on a winning streak in 2014, but after Semyon Varlamov was on injured reserve, he was called back to the Colorado Avalanche on October 16, 2014, when he had to come in for Reto Berra, a 3rd injury player; Pickard lost five goals on 27 shots in a 5–3 loss. Pickard was sent back to the Lake Erie Monsters on October 25, but he was activated on November 18 after Semyon Varlamov sustained a groin injury. Pickard won his first match on November 22 after coming in to save a struggling Reto Berra, but Pickard stopped all 17 shots he faced in a 3-2 victory. Pickard made his debut as the starting goaltender and continued to play with a bang until Semyon Varlamov was the team's primary backup goaltender after he was released on permanent basis. Pickard was returned to Lake Erie on December 28, in order to resume a starting goaltender role. Pickard's 2015–16 season with Colorado's new AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, began the year early this season, when Semyon Varlamov sustained a groin injury. Pickard's first NHL shutout against the New Jersey Devils on January 16, 2016, he would return to the club in late December after Reto Berra fractured his ankle.
Pickard, a restricted free agent, had signed to his first one-way contract with the Avalanche, committing to a two-year, $2 million contract on July 5, 2016. Pickard was considered the backup goaltender for the Avalanche in his first full season in the league in 2016–17, but after a season-ending injury, Pickard was thrust into the starting lineup. He made a career out of a match with 50 appearances, leading the last placed Avalanche in save percentage, goals against average, and victories.
Pickard was the first player selected by the Vegas Golden Knights in the off-season after being revealed at the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft. Pickard was supposed to be Marc-André Fleury's backup, and even went as far as organizing a contest with Vegas fans to design his goaltender mask. However, the team claimed goaltender Malcolm Subban off waivers on October 3. Pickard was waived on October 5, as the Golden Knights' AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, decided to go with a tandem of Fleury and Subban instead. Pickard cleared the following day, but just a few hours after clearing, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a 2018 sixth-round draft pick and Tobias Lindberg. Pickard was immediately assigned to the Toronto Marlies' Maple Leafs affiliate, having already cleared waivers. Pickard and fellow Marlies goaltender Garret Sparks were named with the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award on April 15, 2018. Pickard, who helped the Marlies win their first Calder Cup, has signed a one-year contract extension to remain with the team.
Sparks was selected to be the Maple Leafs' backup during the 2018–19 season, causing Pickard to be suspended on October 1, 2018. The Philadelphia Flyers claimed him the next day.
In the Philadelphia Flyers' traditional Black Friday matinee, Pickard had his fourth shutout of his career and his first with the Philadelphia Flyers on November 23, 2018. He missed four goals on six shots against the Toronto Maple Leafs on the following day, and was removed from the net about twelve minutes into the match in favor of Anthony Stolarz. He did not begin a new game with the Flyers. Pickard was once more put on waivers on November 28 after having a.86 percent save percentage and a poor 4.01 goals against average. Pickard was waived off waivers by the Arizona Coyotes the following day. Pickard, the club's third choice goaltender, appeared on six different occasions, but was unable to win a match, despite being unable to win a game.
Pickard, a free agent from Arizona, decided on a two-year, $1.5 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings on July 1, 2019, his fifth team in two years.
Pickard was also drafted to the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit's affiliate, after a good pre-season showing, with whom he played the majority of the game. For the week of January 5, he was named AHL Player of the Week. Since goaltenders Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Bernier went down with minor injuries, he was recalled to the Red Wings on three separate occasions. Pickard appeared in three games for the Red Wings, going winless and allowing 15 goals with a 5.46 GAA. On January 23, 2020, Pickard was called to Grand Rapids to assist in their playoff quest. The season was indefinitely suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic less than two months later.
Following the eight-month break, Detroit loaned Pickard to the Vienna Capitals of the ICE Hockey League prior to the 2020–21 NHL season. He had a 3–3 record before being called to Detroit on January 3, 2021. Following a training camp for the sole purpose of being assigned to a taxi team, Pickard was suspended. Pickard had a quiet season, with only manning Detroit's crease six times, going 2–1–1. Despite this, he was one of the Red Wings' season's best performances against the Columbus Blue Jackets in March.
Pickard was signed by the Red Wings to a one-year contract extension on July 28, 2021.
Pickard, who had been a free agent for two years, had signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Edmonton Oilers on July 13, 2022.
