Playing career

Morris made his first grade debut for the St. George Illawarra in round 9, defeating the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks on the wing in a 30–12 loss at Remondis Stadium. Morris scored his first NRL try in round 15, against the Brisbane Broncos, at Suncorp Stadium, in the 79th minute. Morris scored 12 times in 19 matches in his debut year.

Morris lost in his first match of the season and first match against the Cronulla Sharks in 2007. Morris sustained a season-ending shoulder injury while playing just two games this year against the Sydney Roosters in round 7 of the ANZAC Day match.

Morris made his return to the St. George Illawarra first grade team in round 1, against the Wests Tigers in 2008. In round 7, the ANZAC Day match against the Sydney Roosters, Brett and his twin Josh scored tries in the same match together, resulting in the Dragons' 26–6 victory at ANZ Stadium. Morris had 16 matches and 8 tries in the year.

Morris had a superb 2009 NRL season, including four goals against the North Queensland Cowboys in round 9 against Cronulla-Sutherland and another hat trick against the Parramatta Eels in round 11. With 25 tries in 24 matches, he was named Dally M top tryscorer of the year.

Morris was selected to represent Australia in the 2009 Four Nations tournament. In the 46-16 Final victory over England at Elland Road, he crossed six times in four matches to finish the tournament as the best try-scorer, with two tries. Morris re-signed with the Dragons until 2012 and said after his release: "I love living in Wollongong, where my family and friends are located, and the Dragons are the team I grew up supporting, so I'm delighted to be staying."

Morris maintained his try-scoring form early in the season by scoring a hat-trick against his twin brother's team, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, in round 2. In the 2010 Anzac Test, he was selected on the wing for Australia, scoring both of Australia's goals in the 12–8 victory. Morris played on the wing in game 1 of the 2010 State of Origin series for New South Wales, playing on the wing in the Blues' 28–24 loss at ANZ Stadium. He was in all three matches of the series in the NSW 3–0 series loss. Morris stayed on the wing in 2010 NRL Grand Final against the Sydney Roosters, assisting St. George Illawarra in their first premiership as a joint venture. The grand final victory brought St. George fans of the joint venture back to their roots, who had been close to ending their drought on several occasions. Morris was the Dragons' highest tryscorer in 25 matches in the 2010 NRL season. He was later selected for the Australia 2010 Four Nations squad, where he was involved in 4 matches and scoring 3 tries in the tournament, as well as playing on the wing against New Zealand in the Final.

Morris appeared with the Indigenous All Stars against the NRL All Stars in the pre-season. Morris was named man-of-the-match after scoring two tries in the Dragons' 21-15 victory at DW Stadium in a 2011 World Club Challenge match against the Wigan Warriors, the Wigan Warriors. Morris was instrumental in the 2011 Anzac Test victory over New Zealand, defeating them 20–10. In the 2011 State of Origins collection, he appeared in two matches for New South Wales. Morris played his 100th NRL match against the Canberra Raiders, scoring a try in the Dragons 24-19. In his 21 matches for the Dragons, he scored ten goals.

Morris re-signed with the Dragons for a further three years until the 2015 NRL season comes to an end. Morris was moved from the Dragons' normal position on the wing to fullback by coach Steve Price after a 36-12 win over the Wests Tigers at Jubilee Oval in round 3. Morris played at fullback for NSW Country Origins in Mudgee's 24–22 loss to NSW City. Morris appeared in a game for New South Wales in the 2012 State of Origin series, playing on the wing and scoring a try in the Blues' 21-20 loss at Suncorp Stadium. Morris led the Dragons to their highest tryscorer with 14 attempts in 23 games in the 2012 NRL season.

Morris, a wing player, played for Australia and scored a try against New Zealand in the 2013 Anzac Test 32–12 victory over Canberra Stadium. Morris participated in all three New South Wales' matches and scored a try in the 2013 State of Origins competition. Morris lost by 20 points in round 25 against the Parramatta Eels in his 150th NRL match. Morris spent his 2013 NRL season with the Dragons, playing 21 games and scoring 9 tries.

Morris played for Prime Minister's XIII against Papua New Guinea on September 29, 2013, playing on the wing during the 50–10 victory at Kokopo. Morris took over captaincy in round 22, after normal captain Ben Creagh was out of action due to sickness, and the Dragons defeated Canberra for the first time since round 14 of the 2000 NRL season. Morris played in 18 games and scored 14 tries for the Dragons in the 2014 NRL season.

Morris was drafted for the Australia Kangaroos 2014 Four Nations train-on squad on September 9, 2014, but he was later dropped from the final 24-man squad due to injuries. Brett Morris and his twin brother Josh Morris were reunited with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on October 23, 2014, extending their four-year deal until the end of 2018.

Morris made his club debut for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at full throttle, scoring a point against Penrith Panthers in round one. In round 5, against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, he strained his hamstring in a man-of-the-match effort in the Bulldogs' tumultuous 18–17 loss at ANZ Stadium. In Canterbury's 29–16 victory at ANZ Stadium, he missed 7 rounds before returning in round 13 against his old club, the St. George Illawarra Dragons. Morris appeared in games two and three of the 2015 State of Origin collection, starting on the wing. In the 2015 NRL season, Morris spent his first year with Canterbury, playing in 16 games and scoring 9 tries.

Morris was out for four months due to a knee injury in March 2016. Morris made his return in round 16 after defeating the Brisbane Broncos and kicking a hat trick of tries in the 40-14 victory at ANZ Stadium. England coach Wayne Bennett had Morris and his twin brother Josh to make the switch in June for the forthcoming 2016 Four Nations series. Morris is eligible for England due to his grandparents. Morris played in 11 games and scored 10 tries for the Bulldogs in the 2016 NRL season.

Morris played in his 200th NRL match against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in round 4, defeating Brookvale Oval 36–0. Morris resigned from representative rugby league on July 18th. In his 18 matches for Australia, he had played 15 origins for NSW and had a "incredible record" of 23 attempts. "I'm so proud to have been able to represent my state and my families in the toughest arena of all and have now decided against playing rep football," he said.

Morris signed a 2019 NRL deal for him.

Morris scored a hat-trick on his Roosters debut in the World Club Challenge victory over Wigan on February 17. Morris scored a try for the Roosters in their 26-18 victory over Brookvale Oval in Round 2, but he was forced to leave the field due to a knee injury, but later, the turf took over underneath him.

When the game had ended, Morris was asked by reporters if he was upset at the state of the field after his latest injury. Morris replied, "I'd be lying if I didn't say it was the first time it happened to me." "Well, it's the second time I've been to Brookvale and my knee has dug in, and I've suffered a bruise as a result. As a player, you work so hard to get out of the game, and having this happen as a result of the ground is frustrating. Don't get me wrong; I love playing on suburban grounds. I'm a country boy, and this stuff makes me happy. However, it's frustrating that this has arisen as a result of the surface.

Morris was then ruled out for two to three weeks after suffering a medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear in his left knee.

Morris scored a goal against his former club Canterbury-Bankstown in a 20-12 victory at ANZ Stadium in round 19. The Sydney Roosters defeated the Gold Coast in Round 20 against the Gold Coast, with Morris scoring a Hat-Trick.

Morris was named one of the best players of the decade in the NRL team of the decade, spanning from 2010 to 2019. Phil Gould, Craig Bellamy, Trent Robinson, and Ricky Stuart were among the panelists, as well as Hall of Famers Peter Sterling, Darren Lockyer, Danny Buderus, and Laurie Daley.

Morris announced his retirement from rugby league on June 7, 2021.
