Rugby union career
Whitelock captained both the New Zealand National Under-19 and New Zealand National Under-21 teams.
In 2007, Whitelock made his Otago debut against Southland, playing in all but two of their matches that season. Whitelock and his brother Adam moved to Canterbury in the following year. Whitelock was a member of the 2008 NPC team in his first year with Canterbury. In 2009, Whitelock was named captain of Canterbury's team. He will lead the Canterbury team in one of its most successful seasons, winning his first two NPC titles in a row.
When Canterbury rescued the Ranfurly Shield from Wellington in 2009, Whitelock was also captain.
In 2008, Whitelock made his Crusaders debut against the Lions, becoming the first of the Whitelock brothers to play for the Crusaders. All four Whitelock brothers played together for the first time in a competitive match in March 2013 (vs. Bulls). This was the first time playing together after playing for Fielding High School in 2003 other than a preseason match at the start of the previous season. At their time with the Crusaders, the brothers will play a further 17 games together.
Despite playing for a Crusaders back row stacked with talent, including All Blacks Reuben Thorne, Mose Tuiali'i, Richie McCaw, Keiran Read, and Matt Todd, he's alumne. Whitelock captained them on several occasions during 86 games for the Crusaders, including captaining them on several occasions.
Following the conclusion of the 2014 Super Rugby season, Whitelock declared he was heading to the Robbie Deans-coached Panasonic Wild Knights. At the end of this contract, Whitelock resigned from all forms of rugby.
Whitelock played in Sydney against Italy in 2009, impressing off the bench and scoring a try.
With brother Luke's All Black debut in 2013, George, Sam and Luke became the first trio of siblings to play for the All Blacks.
