Brad Whitford Career

Career

In 1970, Whitford graduated from Reading Memorial High School. Whitford played in local bands such as Cymbals of Resistance, Teapot Dome, Inc., and then a band called Justin Thyme before joining Aerosmith in 1971, replacing original guitarist Ray Tabano. Aerosmith would continue to be one of 1970's most popular bands. Whitford, on the other hand, departed the band in 1981 to work on his own project with singer Derek St. Holmes, naming Whitford/St. Holmes. In 1981, Whitford/St. was dissolved after a single self-titled album was released. Holmes reunited for a 2015 tour, at which a sequel to Reunion was released.

Whitford briefly toured with the Joe Perry Project, which starred former Aerosmith bandmate Joe Perry, before returning to Aerosmith in 1984. All band members completed drug treatment, including Whitford, who completed services to combat his alcohol use in the mid-to-late 1980s. Whitford is still sober to this day and is still an active participant in Aerosmith.

Whitford also served as a producer for the Neighborhoods, a Boston band led by a devoted Aerosmith fan, David Minehan. Minehan was flown to Japan in 1994, where he continued in Whitford's place for many days until Whitford returned.

Whitford missed the start of Aerosmith's 2009 summer tour after suffering a head injury while getting out of his Ferrari, requiring surgery.

Whitford was named one of the Experience Hendrix tour in 2010, alongside other musicians including Joe Satriani, Sacred Steel, Jonny Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Ernie Isley, Living Colour, Hubert Sumlin, Chris Layton, and bassist Billy Cox.

In the Guitar World book The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, Whitford, together with fellow Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, was included.

Whitford/St. made their first appearance in November 2015. Holmes and the Hail Mary were together for a ten-show tour.
