Boone Jenner Career

Playing career

Jenner played four seasons (2009–2013) of major junior hockey with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), scoring 111 goals and 135 assists for 246 points in 246 games played, while receiving 265 penalty minutes in 227 games played.

Jenner was signed by the Columbus Blue Jackets to a three-year, entry-level contract on March 28, 2012. Jenner returned to the Generals in the OHL as a result of the 2012-2013 NHL lockout, and was named captain. He was accepted to participate in the Blue Jackets abbreviated training camp in January, but it was one of the final cuts before the season began. Jenner had 111 goals and 135 assists for 246 points, 263 penalty minutes, and a cumulative +22 plus/minus rating in 227 OHL games. Jenner was recalled to the Springfield Falcons after the Generals were cut from the 2013 J. Ross Robertson Cup Playoffs. Jenner scored the overtime game-winning goal of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal against Syracuse while working with the Falcons. Jenner scored five points in eight playoff games with the Falcons.

Jenner served alongside Blue Jackets strength coach Kevin Collins during the offseason, going through intense workouts geared toward preparing him for the NHL level. Jenner was also admitted to the Blue Jackets training camp in September, where he was lauded by coach Todd Richards. Jenner was drafted on a line alongside Marian Gaborik and Brandon Dubinsky, who assisted him in scoring his first and second NHL goals against the Montreal Canadiens on October 17, 2013. However, his rookie season was cut short after he sustained a leg injury against the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 25. Jenner was eventually called back to the Blue Jackets lineup on November 17, where he made five shot attempts and six hits against the Ottawa Senators in a 4–1 victory. Jenner was playing with Artem Anisimov and Nathan Horton while still leading the team in hits with 51. He also helped the team set a new franchise record with an eight-straight winning streak.

Jenner finished second in hits, third in game-winning goals, and fifth overall in shooting percentage as the Blue Jackets entered the postseason. Ryan Johansen received praise from his teammates for his work, with Ryan Johansen saying, "I'm the first one in on the forecheck trying to murder someone." Jenner and fellow rookie Jack Johnson scored their first playoff goals within three minutes of each other during Game 3 while qualifying for the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. He made his second game of the series during Game 4 to help the Blue Jackets win the game 4–3. The Blue Jackets were eventually defeated by the Penguins and were eliminated from playoff contention.

Jenner was limited to 31 games in the 2014-2015 NHL season due to various injuries following his prolific rookie season. Jenner was supposed to miss five weeks after having broken his hand during preparations at the start of the season. Jenner was admitted to the Blue Jackets shortly after being diagnosed with a stress fractured in his back. In a 3–2 victory over the Calgary Flames on March 21, he returned to regular team practice in March and returned to the lineup.

Jenner was named an alternate captain alongside Brandon Dubinsky and captain Nick Foligno in his third year with the Blue Jackets. Jenner achieved career highs in goals, assists, and points in 63 games and ranked second on the team in goals, power play goals, game-winning goals, shots, and hits as the season progressed. As a result, the Jackets signed him to a two-year contract extension on February 29, 2016. He continued to perform offensively and became the fifth franchise player to have a 30-goal campaign.

Jenner missed all of preparation camp and the preseason after his career-best season. Jenner scored in back-to-back games against Boston and Florida, but not in 11 games in a row. However, Jenner kept his scoring while playing with Alexander Wennberg and Tomas Vanek during the NHL Trade Deadline in late February. He finished the regular season with seven goals and six assists in 17 games during this stretch. Jenner signed a four-year, $15 million deal, with an annual average of $3.75 million, on July 5, 2018. Jenner's offseason training program was revamped following his hire of his first job. In June, he started skating again, concentrating on his speed and agility. He scored his first NHL hat-trick against the Boston Bruins on March 12, 2019, a 7-4 triumph. In 77 games, he had scored 16 goals and 22 assists for 38 points.

Jenner played in his 500th career NHL game while playing in the shortened 2020–21 season. Jenner was also ranked fifth in franchise history, 14th in assists, and sixth in points at the time of this milestone. Through 41 games, he had eight goals and nine assists for 17 points. As a result, Jenner signed a four-year contract extension to remain with the Blue Jackets on July 28, 2021. Jenner was named the seventh captain in the Blue Jackets' franchise history on October 12, 2021.

Mike Babcock, the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, disputes charges that he broke players' privacy by demanding to see snapshots of their families

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 13, 2023
After a study emerged chastising him for privacy invasions, new Columbus Blue Jackets coach Mike Babcock said Tuesday that he did nothing wrong in requesting photos of players on their phones, clarifying that he was attempting to know them. On the Spittin Chiclets' podcast, Paul Bissonnette said he was told by an unidentified player that Babcock had ordered captain Boone Jenner to show him photos. "Let me see the photos in your phone," Bissonnette, a former NHL player-turned-analyst for TNT, told Jenner: "Let me see the pictures in your phone." I want to know what kind of person you are." In a joint statement released by the Blue Jackets, Babcock and Jenner called it "a gross misrepresentation of those meetings and highly offensive." Jenner said the meeting was a positive start to his Babcock friendship and expressed disappointment.
