Nikita Igorevich Kucherov (born 17 June 1993) is a Russian professional ice hockey right winger for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League (NHL).

For his performance during the 2018-19 NHL season, Kucherov won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer, the Ted Lindsay Award as the best player voted by fellow NHL players, and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player to his team.

Personal life

Kucherov was born in Maykop in southern Russia, but moved with his family to Moscow at a young age. His mother took up a job at a hockey rink, which is how Kucherov first started to play.

Kucherov is married to Anastasiya, and has a son, Max, born in 2018.

Kucherov's father, Igor, is a Colonel in the Russian Army.

Playing career

Kucherov, a junior member of CSKA Moscow, competed for Krasna Armiya of the Russian Junior Hockey League, beginning in the 2009-10 season. He spent three seasons with the team and made his professional debut in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) during this period, playing 27 KHL games between 2010-2011 and 2012-12 seasons. He was ranked 58th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Kucherov played major junior hockey with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in an attempt to switch to the North American style. (QMJHL). When playing in the QMJHL, he signed a three-year entry level deal with the Lightning on September 10, 2012.

Kucherov made his NHL debut against the New York Rangers on November 25, 2013. On his first shift against Henrik Lundqvist, he scored a goal on his first shot; he was the seventh player in Lightning history to score a goal in his first appearance in his NHL debut. He had his first hat trick against Mike Smith of the Arizona Coyotes on October 28th.

Kucherov had a breakout season with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2014–15 season. Kucherov was playing on a line with Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat (later dubbed the "Triplets" line) and 65 points. Kucherov tied for the NHL lead in plus-minus with Max Pacioretty at a +38 rating. The +38 rating also set a single season franchise record for +/- ratings. Kucherov became the only Lightning players to score two game-winning goals in overtime in a single playoff year in 2015, after scoring a winner against the New York Rangers on Game 1 of the prior round against the Montreal Canadiens. During Tampa Bay's bid to the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals, the threets will face the Chicago Blackhawks in six games, Kucherov and the Triplets would be one of the most unpredictable lines in hockey. Kucherov scored ten goals and 22 points during the run.

Kucherov was re-signed by the Lightning on October 11, 2016, a three-year, $14.3 million deal. Kucherov led the team in points (66) and was second in assists (36) and goals (30). Kucherov also set a career high in hopes, points, power-play goals (9) and game-winning goals (4). While also leading the team with 19 multi-point games, he came in second place on the team in shots (209) and power-play goals. He appeared in 17 Stanley Cup playoff games with the Lightning last season, scoring 11 goals and 19 points to go along with a +13 rating. He coached the team during the playoffs in terms of goals and points. He also placed second on goals and sixth for points in playoff scoring. Kucherov was named as a member of the Atlantic Division team in the 2017 NHL All-Star game on January 10, 2017. Kucherov scored his 200th point in his NHL career on Sunday, on February 21. Kucherov's second career hat-trick on February 27 was his second hat-trick in Lightning history. It was also the first time a team had all three goals scored during the power plays. Kucherov scored his 100th goal in NHL history on March 18th. Kucherov's second hat trick in less than a month after his first in the 2016-17 season. This was also his third hat trick in his NHL career. Kucherov had two assists on the 27th of March, setting a Lightning record for most points in a single month with 22. Kucherov scored his 40th goal of the season on Saturday, setting a new career record. Kucherov's 40th goal, as the only players in Lightning history with 40-goal seasons, joined Steven Stamkos, Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, and Brian Bradley. Kucherov also joined Alexander Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Ilya Kovalchuk, Pavel Bure, and Alexander Mogilny as the only Russian-born players with a 40-goal season at age 23 or younger. Kucherov was named a NHL second team All-Star for the 2016–17 season on June 21.

Kucherov became the first franchise player to score a goal in five straight games on October 12, 2017. Kucherov scored two more goals on October 16, extending the streak to six games. Kucherov joined Mario Lemieux, Keith Tkachachuk, and Steve Yzerman as the only players in the last 30-years to score a goal in each of their first six games. Kucherov extended his goal scoring streak to seven games on the very next night. Kucherov made history by becoming the sixth player in the modern era (since 1943-1944) to score in each of their team's first seven games. Kucherov's goal scoring streak was ended the following game. Kucherov scored a point in his 11th straight game to start the season on October 26th. Kucherov tied Martin St. Louis for the longest season-opening streak in Lightning history in doing so. Kucherov's streak was cut short during the next game. Kucherov was named to the 2018 NHL All-Star Game, which was held at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, on January 10th. Kucherov defeated the visiting Vancouver Canucks 5-2 on 8 February, on a three-point win. Kucherov scored a goal in a 3–1 Lightning clinching over the New Jersey Devils on April 22nd. The aim was his tenth point of the series, which also set a new franchise record for the most points in a single series.

Kucherov confirmed an eight-year, $76 million contract extension with the Lightning on July 10, 2018. Kucherov played his 190th career NHL appearance in a 3–1 victory over the visiting Detroit Red Wings on October 18th. Kucherov set the franchise record for most assists (21) and points (30) in a single calendar month in December 2018. Kucherov was selected to the 2019 National Hockey League All-Star Game on January 2, 2019. Kucherov's third straight selection to the All-Star Game. Kucherov set the Lightning single season record for points in a season on March 9th for his 109th point. Amalie Arena beat the Detroit Red Wings 3–2. Kucherov scored two power-play goals on March 20th, giving him the most power-play points by a Lightning player in a single season (47). Kucherov scored his 40th goal of the season on April 5th, his 126th point in an NHL season (since 2005), a record previously held by Joe Thornton. Kucherov had 128 points (41 goals and 87 assists) at the end of the regular season, defeating Alexander Mogilny for the most points in a season by a Russian-born player. Kucherov's 87 assists also tied Jaromir Jagr for the most assists in a single NHL season by a wing. Kucherov was given the Art Ross Trophy after amassesing the most points for the regular season. Kucherov was suspended one game for boarding Markus Nutivaara during the team's game two loss on April 12th, following the Lightning's game one loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round of the playoffs. Kucherov received the Hart Memorial Trophy on June 19th, voted by hockey journalists and the Ted Lindsay Award as the most valuable player at the 2019 NHL Awards.

Kucherov had three assists in a Lightning first round clinching victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on August 19, 2020. Kucherov claimed the most points (70) in Lightning playoff history when they defeated Martin St. Louis. Kucherov won by 7–1 Lightning in the third game of their second round series on August 26. Kucherov scored a goal and four assists for a 5-point victory over the New York Islanders in an 8-2 Lightning victory in the first game of the Eastern Conference Final on September 8th. Kucherov's 5-point victory set a new franchise record for points in a single playoff game. Kucherov's 4 assists set a new franchise record for the most assists in a single playoff season (16). Kucherov's interest in the game put him over St. Louis for the most Lightning playoff goals (34). In game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final on September 21, Kucherov received two assists. Kucherov led Brad Richards for the most points in a single playoff season in franchise history. Kucherov was named as a Second Team All-Star for the 2019-20 season on the same day. Kucherov and Brayden Point also became the first players to score 30 points (34 and 33 respectively) since Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin (31 and 37 respectively) in 2009.

Kucherov will have hip surgery and will miss the entire 2020–21 regular season, according to the announcement on December 23, 2020. The NHL has revealed a list of the first 32 names to be chosen for the 2023 All-Star Game, which will be hosted in South Florida. One player from each squad has been chosen to compete in this year's festivities, which have traditionally featured a skills competition and games between divisions. During the next 12 days, the NHL also revealed that three new players (two skaters and a goalie) would be voted by a fan vote.
