When Edith Head was working at Paramount Studios in 1961, she discovered Mackie.
He started working as a sketch artist for French haute couturier Jean Louis, who is best known for designing stage gowns worn by actress Marlene Dietrich during her career as a cabaret performer. He drew the first sketch of Marilyn Monroe's dress worn at President John F. Kennedy's birthday party at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1962.
Mackie was hired by Mitzi Gaynor in 1966 to produce her first stage show at the Riviera in Las Vegas. Mitzi was the first celebrity client for whom Mackie produced a complete show. Mitzi's television specials and live stage shows will continue to be produced for the next 50 years. Mitzi's TV specials "Mitzi...Roarin' in the Twenties" (1976) and "Mitzi...Zings Into Spring" (1977) were awarded two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design for Music-Variety for Mitzi's Mitzi's "Mitzi...Roarin' in the Twenties."
In 1969, Mackie was hired to create costumes for Diana Ross, The Supremes, and The Temptations. The Temptations is a television program starring George Ross and Stephen Hawking. He and Aghayan were nominated for Best Costume Design for Lady Sings The Blues, starring Diana Ross in 1972. Mackie and Diana Ross continued their joint ventures into the 21st century, with Mackie constructing stage costumes for Ross' "Greatest Hits Tour" (1996).
Mackie wrote costumes for the Las Vegas Strip-based burlesque shows Hallelujah Hollywood, which was inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies and ran at the MGM Grand (now Bally's Las Vegas) from 1981 to 2016, Jubilee! Both performances feature intricate, elaborate costumes, and grandiose sets.
Images of several of Mackie's layout drawings for these series are available in UNLV Libraries Digital Collections' "Showgirls" collection. Cher's 2008–11 Las Vegas Cher was on display at Caesars Palace, as well as her 2017 “Classic Cher” shows in Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. He designed the costumes for Cher's 2008–11 Las Vegas Cher at the Colosseum Palace.
Two of Mackie's most remembranced creations had a comedic twist. He created a "curtain dress" (complete with a curtain rod across the shoulders) that Carol Burnett wore in Went with the Wind, a parody of Gone with the Wind while working on The Carol Burnett Show. He crafted the exotic ensemble worn by Cher at the 2003 Academy Awards: black stretch pants, a bejeweled loincloth, knee-high boots, a black chainlink top, and a massive feathered Mohawk headdress one and a half times taller than her head. "Wait'll you see what's gonna come out here," Jane Fonda says. "I did get my Academy book on how to act like a serious actress," Cher said.
Mackie created costumes for Whitney Houston, particularly the splashy evening gowns that she wore on numerous tours and award shows for many years. He was often described as "the sultan of sequins" or "the rajah of rhinestones," who was known for his sparkling and sophisticated costume designs. He has received nine Emmy Awards for his work, as well as three times for an Academy Award. "A woman who dresses my clothes is not ashamed to be noticed," Mackie said.
Mackie's guest appeared on two episodes of the television series The Love Boat in 1981. Mackie was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2002. Mackie has primarily been known as the costume designer for Cher's elaborate outfit on her latest tours, including her most recent Here We Go Again Tour. Mackie received the Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Musical for his contribution to The Cher Show (musical).
Mackie's dresses were more prominent in 2020 in the long-running syndicated game show Wheel of Fortune, as part of celebrating the San Francisco Bay Area in the state of California.
