Early life

William Ray Engvall Jr. was born in Galveston, Texas, on July 27, 1957. William Ray Engvall Sr., his father, was a US Navy doctor who later went into private practice. Engvall attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, intending to obtain a bachelor's degree and becoming a mentor after graduating from Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas, where he chose trombone when the instructor gave him the option of either that or the tuba that led him to the jazz marching band. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order while in Southwestern. Engvall left college without graduating and went through a variety of careers, including tour guide for Inner Space Caverns and disc jockey in a Dallas, Texas nightclub. He first ventured into stand-up comedy at amateur and open mic nights around Dallas while working as the club DJ.

Bill Engvall Career

Career

Bill Engvall left Southern California in 1990 to dedicate full time to comedy. Rosie O'Donnell's hosting of A Pair of Jokers, as well as an appearance on The Golden Palace, where he portrayed Blanche's son Matthew, a stockbroker turned aspiring comedian. Also appearing on A&E Networks An Evening at The Improv, as well as stand-up routines on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and Late Show with David Letterman, were among the early performances.

Engvall was named Best Male Standup at the American Comedy Awards in 1992, a career breakthrough. He was first cast in the ABC series Delta, starring Delta Burke, right after. However, Engvall returned to making the rounds of comedy clubs and the occasional television appearance until 1996, when he was cast with fellow comedian and best friend Jeff Foxworthy in the NBC version of The Jeff Foxworthy Show. Engvall's debut was in 1996, when Warner Records introduced Here's Your Sign, based on his signature parody. The album was rated Platinum and reached number five on the Billboard Country album chart, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Top 10 list. Excerpts from this album were turned into a musical track titled "Here's Your Sign (Get the Picture)" featuring a chorus performed by country music artist Travis Tritt. In 1997, "Here's Your Sign (Get the Picture)" charted at number 29 on Billboard Hot Country Songs and number 43 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and number 43 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charted. By the end of the 1990s, Engvall had two more albums: Dorkfish in 1998 and 1999's Here's Your Christmas Album. The latter included narrations by Engvall, as well as songs co-written by session musicians. In both 1998 and 1999, one of these original compositions, "Here's Your Sign Christmas," made the country charts.

Engvall left Warner Records for BNA Records in 2000, citing organizational changes at Warner. Now That's Awesome, his only BNA album, came out in the same year. This collection included two tracks that interpolated stand-up lines from the album with a musical track, like most of the albums before it. T. Graham Brown, Tracy Byrd, and Neal McCoy performed on the title track, while Julie Reeves appeared on "Shoulda Shut Up."

Engvall's music returned to Warner for all subsequent albums. Drunk: Here's Your Sign Reloaded in 2003, 15° Off Cool in 2007, and Aged and Confused in 2009.

Jeff Foxworthy and Engvall performed the first of six Blue Collar Comedy Tours in 2000. Ron White and Larry the Cable Guy were also on tour, and they were largely responsible for the company's triumph. Each of the six years of the tour was extremely popular and spawned three films, a satellite radio station, and a television series named Blue Collar TV on The WB Network.

Engvall appeared in his own sitcom in 2007, where he played himself as a family counselor. The show lasted three seasons.

Engvall took over as host of Lingo on Game Show Network on June 6, 2011. Engvall said he jumped at the opportunity to host the show, citing the fun that his friend Foxworthy had hosting Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? Engvall had been a fan of Lingo years before its cancellation in 2007, admitting that his wife and his wife always beat him to the answers. When asked whether there were any plans to have friends Foxworthy or Larry the Cable Guy appear on Lingo, he said, "You never know!" Since it will be a blast, I would love to have them on the show. "I would really dig it."

On the 17th season of Dancing with the Stars, Engvall was named as a contestant, partnering professional dancer Emma Slater. He performed the Foxtrot for the first week in a score of 18. The second week was Latin Week, with some of the judges' highest ratings for his Jive earning a 21. Bill's highest point of 24 was recorded during the third week of competition, with a Paso Doble to the Lone Ranger theme song. The judges usually placed Engvall and Slater at the bottom of the leaderboard, but a large fan base kept them in the competition, resulting in higher-scoring contestants, e.g. Instead, Christina Milian, Snooki, Brant Daugherty, Elizabeth Berkley, Elizabeth Berkley, Leah Remini were voted out, with Leah Remini replacing Leah Remini.

Engvall and Slater qualified to the finals on November 18, as well as Amber Riley, Jack Osbourne, and Corbin Bleu. The two teams finished in fourth place.
