Bhumika Chawla (born Rachna Chawla on 21 August 1978) is an Indian actress and a former model.

She made her film debut in the Telugu film Yuvakudu (2000) and has since then worked in various Indian film industries and appeared in over thirty films in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Bhojpuri, and Punjabi.

Her notable performances include Badri (2001) , Kushi (2001) , Okkadu (2003) , Tere Naam (2003) , Missamma (2003) , Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (2006) , Gandhi, My Father (2007) , Anasuya (2007) and Buddy (2013).

Early life

Chawla was born in a Punjabi family in New Delhi, India and completed her schooling there. Her father is a retired Army officer. Bhumika has two siblings, an elder brother and sister.

She moved to Mumbai in 1997 and started her career with Ad films and Hindi music video albums. She appeared in the Zee TV series Hip Hip Hurray and Star Best Sellers - Fursat Mein.

Personal life

Chawla married her long-time boyfriend and yoga teacher Bharat Thakur on 21 October 2007 at Devlali, Nashik in a Gurdwara. She went regularly to Thakur's courses and is said to have dated him for four years before marrying him. The couple has a son born in February 2014.

Chawla began her film career in Telugu by playing in the 2000 feature film Yuvakudu (2000) with actor Sumanth. Kushi (2001), her second film in Telugu, in which she appeared opposite Pawan Kalyan, was a box office hit, winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu, following which she appeared in several films, including Okkadu (2004) opposite Jr. NTR, which became two of the year's top grossers in Telugu. In addition,, she made her debut in Tamil cinema and appeared in the film Badri (2001) opposite actor Vijay, which was followed by her second Tamil film Roja Kootam (2002). Her success in Missamma (2003), as a businesswoman with cancer, was applauded. She was nominated for the FilmfareAward for Best Actress- Telugu, and she received the Nandi Award for Best Actress.

Chawla starred in her first Bollywood film, Tere Naam (2003), alongside Salman Khan, after a string of critically and commercially successful films in the South. The film was one of the year's highest grossers. It was a critical success, and her participation in the film earned her many accolades as well as numerous awards for Best Debut at various award ceremonies. She was nominated for her first Filmfare Best Actress Award and also received the Best Debut trophy at the Zee Cine Awards ceremony.

She appeared in a number of Hindi films, including Run (2004), a remake of the same-named Tamil film Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa (2004), and Dil Jo Bhi Kahey (2005), alongside Amitabh Bachchan. She returned to Telugu after appearing in the films Naa Autograph (2004) (a remake of the Tamil film Autograph) and Jai Chiranjeeva, alongside Chiranjeevi and Sameera Reddy. Although Chawla's appearance in the former received her accolades and the CineMAA Jury Award for Best Actress, the latter became a smash movie.

Chawla appeared in the Tamil film Sillunu Oru Kaadhal, alongside real-life couple Surya and Jyothika, which became a big hit worldwide, while also appearing in the Hindi film Family - Ties of Blood, in which she shared screen space with Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar and appeared in the Telugu fantasy film Mayabazar. Following this, she appeared in Gandhi's Memoron, My Father, as Gulab Gandhi, Anasuya, a crime thriller, and Gangotri, a sequel to the smashing 2006 Bhojpuri film Ganga, as Amitabh Bachchan. Her performance in Anasuya, as an Investigative journalist covering the case of a serial murderer, earned critical praise. She was nominated for the Best Actress – Telugu Award by the Santosham Best Actress Award.

She made her debut in Punjabi cinema in 2008, opposite Gurdas Maan, and then appeared in Yaariyan, as well as in Bhramaram alongside Mohanlal. She is currently shooting in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, which includes Thangar Bachan's Kalavadiya Pozhudugal opposite Prabhu Deva in Tamil, Yagam, alongside Navdeep in Telugu. She appeared in the 2016 film M.S., as well as others. The Untold Story of Dhoni. In the film, she played the role of MS dhony's sister. She has worked at MCA in Telugu, for which she was awarded the Best Supporting Actress, SIIMA, and Zee Apsara Best Support Actress. She appeared in Telugu - Tamil U Turn, which received raves.

In 2018, she made her debut in Web Series with Bhram, alongside Kalki Koechlin and Sanjay Suri.

Seetimaar and Idhe Maa Katha and Operation Majnu, which are both Telugu films, are currently filming in 2021 and 2021.

Chawla will be seen in her forthcoming sports drama film 'Seetimaarr'. Sampath Nandi's directorship had a hand in the production. Gopichand, Tamannaah, Digangana Suryavanshi, and Juditha Suryavanshi appear in the film cast.
