Bhumi Pednekar (born 18 July 1989) is an Indian film actress.

Pednekar made her film debut in the company's romantic comedy Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015), earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut after six years as an assistant casting director at Yash Raj Films. Pednekar rose to fame by portraying a headstrong woman in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), one of India's top-grossing films, and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), for which she was nominated for the Best Actress award.

Early life

Pednekar was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) on July 18, 1989. She is of Konkani and Haryanvi descent; her father, Satish, was a Maharashtra former home and labour minister, and Sumitra's mother, Sumitra, was an anti-tobacco campaigner after her husband's death from oral cancer. She obtained her education at Arya Mandir in Juhu. Her parents took out a study loan for her to study acting at Whistling Woods International, but she was refused because of her inability. She joined Yash Raj Films as an assistant film producer and repaid the loan within a year and a half. She continued to work with the firm for six years under Shanoo Sharma.

Pednekar's debut in the Yash Raj Films-produced and Sharat Katariya-directed romantic comedy Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) In preparation, she gained almost 12 kg body mass. "Pednekar steals the film with a definite twist, inevitably making you care for Sandhya without ever reducing her to a slobbering, self-pity caricature," Rajeev Masand wrote. She started losing weight and posting tips and tricks of the procedure on social media after filming. Dum Laga Ke Haisha, a commercial success, received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, as well as the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Sonchiriya, Abhishek Chaubey's crime drama, was the first publication of 2019 by Pednekar. Sushant Singh Rajput and Manoj Bajpayee were among the rural Chambal youngsters on the lampers. She underwent two and a half months of physical preparation to portray her character's demeanor and gait; she also learned how to handle a rifle. Pednekar starred in Bala and Patni Aur Woh in 2019, continuing her portrayals of headstrong small-town women. In which she portrayed a dark-skinned woman who is subjected to bigotry due to her skin color, the former spent her third collaboration with Khurrana. The controversy arose over the casting of a fair-skinned woman in the role, but Pednekar said that an actor should be allowed to play any part. Pati Patni Aur Woh, a remake of a 1978 film starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday, starred her as a housewife with a philandering husband. "It's Bhumi Pednekar's spirited Vedika who moves the content up a notch," Anupama Chopra wrote. "Bhumi has an intelligence that saves some of the silliest scenes in this film, particularly in the climax." Both Bala and Patni Aur Woh were commercially successful, with each grossing over 1 billion (US$13 million) worldwide.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and co-starring Konkona Sen Sharma, was screened at the 24th Busan International Film Festival in 2019 and then released on Netflix later this year. Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in said that although doing a "fine career," Pednekar had been overshadowed by her co-star Sen Sharma's presence. Nevertheless, both actresses were nominated for the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. She appeared in Shubh Mangal Zyadhan's comedy-drama and the horror film Bhoot: Part One: The Haunted Ship. Pednekar starred in a direct sequel to Bhaagamathie, named Durgamati, which was also released on Amazon Prime Video in the same year. Rohan Naahar of Hindustan Times detested the film and Pednekar's performance in a scathing review.

Pednekar starred in a lavender wedding in the comedy-drama Badhaai Do (2022), after a year absence from film. Rachana Dubey of The Times of India praised the film's treatment of LGBT issues and said that Pednekar's performance was "sensitive, nuanced, and on point."

Pednekar will appear in Shashank Khaitan's comedy Govinda Naam Mera, co-starring Vicky Kaushal and Kiara Advani. In Aanand L. Rai's family film Raksha Bandhan and with Rajkummar Rao in Anubhav Sinha's thriller Bheed, she will reteam with Akshay Kumar. In addition, she will appear as a police officer in the thriller Bhakshak and as Arjun Kapoor in the thriller The Lady Killer.
