Bernard John Manning (13 August 1930-07) was an English comedian and nightclub owner.Manning rose to fame on British television in the 1970s, appearing on programs such as The Comedians and The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club.
Manning's act became out of control as public perceptions changed, with the result that he was seldom seen on television in the last few decades of his career.
However, he continued to perform at live venues until his death.
Early life
Manning was born in Harpurhey, Lancashire, and raised in Ancoats, Manchester's second oldest brother and two sisters. He had Russian Jewish ancestry on his father's side, as well as Irish roots, and was raised a "strict Catholic." He claimed in an interview with Allison Pearson of The Daily Telegraph that his paternal grandfather came from Sebastopol and changed the family name from Blomberg.
He left school at the age of 14, worked in a tobacco plant, and joined his father's greengrocery company before joining the British Army to complete his National Service.
Manning had no interest in entertainment until he was sent to Germany, where he started to sing famous songs to entertain his fellow soldiers and pass the time. This ability led him to put on free shows at the weekends; when he first began to charge admission and audiences did not decrease, he discovered that show profit could be a possibility.
Personal life
Manning named his house in Alkrington "shalom," the Hebrew word for "peace."
Manning was a lifelong Manchester City supporter. On November 27, 1991, he appeared on This Is Your Life. He was a teetotaler and a diabetic in many of his later years.
Manning died in North Manchester General Hospital at 3:10 p.m. on June 18, 2007, having been admitted two weeks earlier for a kidney disease. He was 76 years old at the time. In the Daily Mail two days later, he had written his own eulogy, which appeared as an obituary.
Career
Manning continued to perform professionally and also served as a compère after returning to England. He was a good singer of popular ballads and fronted major bands in the 1950s, including appearances at the Ritz Hotel. He began to inject humour into his compering over the years. Manning transitioned from being a singer and compère to a comedian in a slow fashion. Manning borrowed £30,000 from his father and converted it into the Embassy Club on the A664 Rochdale Road in 1959. Manning's income has risen sharply, rather quickly. Manning said that the Beatles appeared at several other venues earlier in their careers.
He made his television debut on the Granada comedy show The Comedians in 1971 after a lot of work in comedy clubs and northern working men's clubs in the 1950s and 1960s. He coordinated The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club, which began in 1974. Manning's works were often regarded as "harmless banter" during this period.
In 1981, he appeared in Under Manning, a comedy quiz show that was produced by Southern Television. Manning was poorly received and short-lived, and by the 1980s, Manning had fallen out of favor with television companies, either because of evolving tastes or his inability to engage with television companies. However, his appearances on the northern Working Men's Club circuit stayed strong, performing to packed audiences that included people from ethnic minorities.
Two black waitresses at a charity dinner at a hotel in Derbyshire in 1994 protested Manning's legislation and appealed to an employment tribunal for the hotel's race discrimination, alleging that the word "wog" had been used. Manning said in reaction that "wog" was "a horrible, insulting word I've never used in my life," but that the use of the terms "nigger" and "coon" was "legitimized" as historical terms with legitimate roots. The plaintiffs initially lost, but the decision was reversed on appeal, and they were given an undisclosed sum. Manning confessed to being a bigote on 19 March 19, 1998, offended host Caroline Aherne and the audience went down badly with the show.
Manning never toned down his act, but he did have a little television comeback near the end of his life, with Channel 4 taking him to Mumbai to perform. He appeared on a Great Lives program for Radio 4 in October 2002. Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic nun, was honoured by the Pope. Manning was initially scheduled to attend a BNP rally in 2003. "It's a lot of bollocks," he said to the Daily Mirror: "It's a lot of bollocks." I'm not sure where I'm going to work. Speak with my agent. I'm not aware of any BNP BSBS. I wouldn't do it anyway.Do you think I'm fucking barmy?"
He appeared at chef Marco Pierre White's 45th birthday party in 2006.Bernard Manning Jr., the ambassador's son, died in one ear after his dad suffered a mini stroke and became deaf in one ear. He considered his father's behavior in bookings inappropriate for reservations and turned the bar into an alternative comedy venue.
