Benjamin Mendy Life

Benjamin Mendy (born 17 July 1994) is a French professional footballer who plays for both Manchester City and the French national team. Mendy started playing for the club's reserve team in 2010, eventually being promoted to the first team a year later after passing through Le Havre's youth academy.

He stayed with the club until 2013, when he joined Marseille in Ligue 1.

Mendy spent three seasons with Les Olympiens before moving to Monaco, where he captured the national championship in 2016–17.

Mendy joined Manchester City in the summer of 2017 for a then world-record transfer fee for a defender.

In his first season in England, he secured the Premier League. After being captained by France youth teams under-16, under-17, under-19, and under-21, Mendy made his senior debut for France in 2017.

He was chosen in France's squad for the 2018 World Cup, which they won.

Personal life

Mendy is a practicing Muslim who has travelled from Hajj to Mecca.

Mendy was charged by Cheshire Constabulary with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault on August 26, 2021, and he was remanded in prison. The first charges related to suspected assaults against three separate female suspects, all aged over 16, between October 2020 and August 2021. His request for bail was refused because he had breached previous bail terms requiring that he does not attend any house parties. He was banned from attending a hearing in Manchester City pending a hearing. On September 10, the defendant was remanded in detention and appeared in court.

Mendy was charged with two new counts of rape on November 16, 2021. He was charged with a new count of rape in December, allegedly perpetrated against a new complainant. His trial date was moved from January 2022 to later this year.

Mendy was granted bail on the condition that he resided at his home address in Prestbury, Cheshire, rather than calling complainants and hand over his passport. He appeared in court on February 2nd on suspicion of attempted rape against a sixth complainant. On May 22, mendy pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape, one of attempted rape and another of sexual assault involving six complainants. Mendy was charged with an additional rape brought forward by a new accusant on June 1st.

On August 10, 2022, the trial started in Chester Crown Court. In eight rapes, one attempted rape, and a sexual assault were all charged. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. The jury was made up of 14 jurors – eight men and six women, as well as two alternates – who had to state that they had no connection to Manchester City, Manchester United, or the police.

Mendy was found not guilty of one count of rape against a 19-year-old woman on September 13, 2022. After the accused refused not to request a guilty verdict on the one count, judge Stephen Everett ordered the jury to deliver a not guilty verdict.

Benjamin Mendy Career

Club career

Mendy completed his first professional deal, a three-year deal with Le Havre in Ligue 2. In the team's 2–1 Coupe de la Ligue second round loss to Amiens on August 9, Mendy made his professional debut on August 9, 2011.

Mendy joined Olympique de Marseille, a Ligue 1 team, on July 8th. Mendy was signed by manager Élie Baup, who led Marseille to a second-place finish and qualifying for the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League's second season. On August 11-8 against Guingamp, he made his team and Ligue 1 debut against Guingamp, scoring his first goal against Marseille against Saint-Étienne. Mendy was in the squad for all six group stage games and made his European debut on October 1st at Borussia Dortmund. Marseille, on the other hand, lost all their group stage matches as a result of the tournament, and Baup was dismissed in favour of former team manager José Anigo. In Marseille's last 14 games, mendy was sparingly used toward the end of the season by Anigo, with just one starting point. Former Marseille left-back Éric Di Meco, who said he would "eat a rat" if Mendy ever made the French national team, was chastised for his start against Lille on April 20th. Mendy was one of the 40-man shortlist for the 2014 Golden Boy award after the season.

Mendy continued his game under Argentinian boss Marcelo Bielsa's leadership as Mendy said Bielsa had "given back to him the energy and aggression that he lost last year." In the 2014–15 season, Mendy made 33 appearances in the league, as well as Marseille qualifying for the Europa League. After coming on as a replacement against Toulouse, Mendy received a straight red card on September 23, 2015, after committing a professional foul on Toulouse's Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro. After suffering a hamstring injury against Caen in the Coupe de France on January 3, 2016, Mendy will be banned for two games, while Marseille's 13 games later missed another 13 games.

In three seasons at the Stade Vélodrome, Mendy served for five different bosses. He made 102 appearances with the team, and had 14 assists to his name.

Monaco, Olympique de Marseille's Ligue 1 rivals, reported on June 22 that they had signed Mendy on a five-year deal. On the first leg of the Champions League third round against Turkish club Fenerbahçe on July 27, Mendy made his club debut against the club in the first leg of the Champions League third round. Mendy was issued a red card for kicking off the backside of Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso on December 18th. Since being sent off in the play-off round of the Champions League against Villarreal, this was his second dismissal of the season. When he returned to Lorient on February 22, 2017, he was suspended for five games, then reduced to four.

Mendy scored two of Monaco's goals by crossing the ball to the scorers Valère Germain and Radamel Falcao in their 3–0 Ligue 1 home win over Nice on Tuesday. On March 1, Mendy scored his first goal for Monaco in the Coupe de France against former Marseille FC. In the 4–3 win, Monaco took the lead thanks to the goal, which was scored in extra time. Mendy also contributed two assists. Monaco advanced to the semifinals of the Champions League, and Mendy provided four assists in the campaign before being disqualified by Juventus.

Mendy was a key part of Monaco's 2016-17 Ligue 1 championship season, making 24 starts for Les Monégasques under new manager Leonardo Jardim. Throughout the season, Monaco scored 107 goals, and Mendy was praised alongside fellow full-back Djibril Sidibé for their forward play. Mendy and 5 of his colleagues were named to the 2017 UNFP Team of the Year on May 16th. On the penultimate day of the season, Monaco captured the Ligue 1 title against Saint-Étienne, the first game of the season for the club's first game in 17 years. Mendy was one of the numerous exodus from the Stade Louis II, which included actor Bernardo Silva, Tiémoué Bakayoko, and later Kylian Mbappé.

Manchester City had signed Mendy on a six-year deal, according to a fee that was reported to be £52 million. The transfer fee beat the previous record for a defender set ten days before by city mate Kyle Walker.

Mendy sustained an injury against Crystal Palace on September 23, 2017, tearing his right knee against Palace forward Andros Townsend. He later revealed that he had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, and he underwent surgery in Barcelona on September 29. In a game against Swansea City at the City of Manchester Stadium on April 22, 2018, Mendy returned from injury as a 75th-minute replacement for Fabian Delph. This year, he received the minimum five league games required to earn a Premier League champion's medal.

Mendy played in ten of the first 12 Premier League games for City in the 2018–19 season, scoring five goals along the way. It was announced that Mendy had undergone surgery in Barcelona for a cartilage tear in his left knee and was expected to miss 12 weeks.

In a 5–0 home league victory over Burnley on November 28, Mendy scored his first goal for the city.

International career

Mendy is a French youth international who has represented his country at under-16 and under-17 levels. In 2011, he was part of the under-17 team that advanced to the quarter-finals at the 2011 U-17 World Cup.

Mendy was called up to the senior France squad for the first time in March 2017 against Luxembourg and Spain. He made his debut on March 25th against the former on March 25, 2017, losing the whole match in a 3–1 2018 World Cup qualification away win.

Benjamin Mendy claims 'several Manchester City stars joined sex parties' as he sues club for £11million in unpaid wages after rape charge

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 15, 2024
The French national claims he was lent cash by three of his teammates who stepped in when the club stopped paying him while he battled rape and sexual assault charges, an employment tribunal has heard. Mendy told the tribunal: 'We all had casual relations with women. 'This does not excuse my behaviour, but I feel that it is unfair for Manchester City to single me out in the way that they have. 'The difference between me and the other players is that I was the one that was falsely accused of rape and publicly humiliated.'

Current and former players Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez supported the French international, who now claims to be owed £11.5m in unpaid wages by the Premier League champions. The 30-year-old's £500,000 per month wage was withheld by the club after he was charged in 2021, the tribunal was told. The World Cup winner was subsequently cleared. Marseille have signed Mason Greenwood and Adrien Rabiot... and they 'wanted Benjamin Mendy' - why football's most controversial club are happy to offer lifelines to stars with chequered pasts

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 28, 2024
Marseille created history when they became the first French club to win the Champions League in 1993.  But just weeks later, a criminal investigation was opened against the club following allegations that they bribed Valenciennes players to underperform against them in a Ligue 1 match so they would remain fresh for their European final against AC Milan six days later. A trial took place in 1995, with Marseille midfielder Jean-Jacques Eydelie handed a one-year prison sentence and general manager Jean-Pierre Bernes a two-year suspended sentence along with a fine, while Valenciennes players Jorge Burruchaga and Christophe Robert were given six-month suspended sentences for their involvement.
