Josh Windass Career

Career

Windass played youth football for Huddersfield Town, the club's ten-year commitment. He was released in April 2012 and charged with Bradford City the same month. Windass began his senior career with non-league Harrogate Railway Athletic in December 2012. He worked on a semi-professional basis, mixing his football experience with a career as a building laborer.

In July 2013, he began a new life with Accrington Stanley. In the FA Cup, he made his professional debut on November 9, 2013. On the recommendation of his father, he turned down a new deal with the club in November 2015. Accrington revealed in January 2016 that Scottish club Rangers had contacted Windass and teammate Matt Crooks directly due to their being in the final six months of their contracts. The pair signed pre-contracts with Rangers later this month, ahead of the 2016–17 season.

Windass joined Rangers on July 1st, 2016, completing a four-year deal with fellow Accrington player Matt Crooks. Since Rangers decided a compensation fee with Accrington, the two players had already been training with the club before completing their transfers. Windass scored the first goal in a 2–1 victory on his debut for Rangers in a pre-season friendly against American side Charleston Battery on July 7, 2016. Windass scored his first goal for the club against Lowland Football League side East Stirlingshire on July 16th. Windass spent a portion of the first half of the 2016–17 season on the sidelines due to a recurring hamstring injury that occurred in early August and October. Despite this, Windass was linked with a return to England in December 2016, with EFL Championship teams Derby County and Newcastle United reportedly showing an interest in the midfielder.

F.C. During the 2017–18 Rangers. Windass finished the season with 18 goals in all competitions, tied (with Alfredo Morelos) as the club's top scorer for the season; with 13 of Windass' strikes in the league, the third-highest total behind Kris Boyd and Morelos.

On August 9, 2018, he signed for Wigan Athletic.

Windass joined Sheffield on loan for the remainder of the 2019-20 season, beginning on January 31. Due to Covid-19's loan term was postponed until the end of July.

He made his move to Sheffield on Wednesday, paying an undisclosed fee. He made his first appearance on his return to the club on September 5th, when he was recalled as a second half replacement against Walsall. In an away victory over Cardiff City on the first day of the season, he would score his first goal as a permanent Wednesday player. After scoring two goals in five appearances, he would win the club player of the month competition for the first month back at the club. Windass was heavily associated with returns to the Championship following his promotion to League One, with the club refusing to entertain bids in the region of £1 million.

Windass sustained a hamstring injury during a friendly against West Bromwich Albion, which will keep him out for two months and the start of the League One season. Despite being sick, he signed a new two-year contract with the club on August 10th, 2021, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2023. Following his injury, he returned to the team on November 20th as an unused substitute against Accrington Stanley and made his playing debut against Milton Keynes Dons, when he came off the bench to score a victory for injury time. Following the end of the 2021-22 season, there was renewed interest in him, with ex Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha naming him with a surprise transfer to Atlético Talleres.
