Ben Shewry Career

Career

Shewry was one of six chefs on the inaugural season of Netflix's original documentary Chef's Table. His personal life, struggles, and inspiration for cooking are all detailed in the film. His cooking philosophy is deeply rooted in the use of indigenous ingredients that are both in Australia and New Zealand contexts. Shewry has expressed excitement for his own inspired by the indigenous Maori hangi (or earth oven feast) and other indigenous ingredients such as kmara (sweet potato) and native mutton birds.

The use of ingredients native to Australia in a top restaurant was a new concept that was not widely accepted initially, making it difficult for his restaurant to attract a following. Locals and journalists were attracted to his unorthodox cooking style, and Attica has since been nominated for numerous prestigious awards and attracts top chefs from around the world. Shewry has also appeared in the Netflix series Restaurant Australia and Chef's Table.

In 2019, his restaurant Attica was named Australia's best restaurant at the Gourmet Traveller food awards.
