Ben de Lisi (born 31 May 1955) is an American born fashion designer based in London.
He is best known for his collections with high street store Debenhams as well as as a mentor and judge on the television show Project Catwalk.
Early life
De Lisi was born in New York and grew up in Long Island. When observing sculpture at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, he and his grandmother married. He became interested in fashion after his grandmother taught him how to sew and reconstruct a pair of trousers he could not afford to buy.
Personal life
De Lisi lives in a Victorian cottage by the River Thames near Battersea Bridge, which he used as the inspiration for his Debenham homeware collection. He has a long-term friendship with Gerardo Vidaurre.
On July 14, 2006, Ben was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Northampton. De Lisi was given an honorary degree by Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, on July 17, 2009.
Career
De Lisi began designing his own menswear collection in 1979, and in 1982, he moved to London in the fashion business. In 1992, he began working with Debenhams.
De Lisi made his London Fashion Week debut in 1994 and 1995, winning the British Glamour Designer of the Year award in both 1994 and 1995. He formed his own business in 1998, which also included evening dresses for Kate Winslet (2002 Oscars red dress), Helena Bonham Carter and Anjelica Huston. He closed his womenswear line as well as his flagship London store in 2009 to concentrate on his "BDL by Ben de Lisi" series for Debenhams.
In 1997, de Lisi began producing BDL by Ben de Lisi, a speciality occasion-wear diffusion line, in collaboration with Debenhams. Debenhams' relationship was extended in 2009 to include a homeware collection based on his own house in Battersea. Ella, the collection's first French bulldog, has a logo based on his first French bulldog. He asked to reimagine the Principles range, which was the most profitable launch Debenhams has ever produced.
The Department of Health approached de Lisi in 2010 and offered him an open invitation to choose any project he wanted to update. De Lisi assisted the NHS in redesigning their hospital gown rather than designing one as expected.
